Opting for olive oil could boost brain health, new study suggests (1/2+ tablespoon/day associated with 28% less dementia)
Medical Xpress / American Society for Nutrition / NUTRITION 2023 ^ | July 24, 2023 | Anne-Julie Tessier, RD, Ph.D. et al

Posted on 07/28/2023 7:58:27 AM PDT by ConservativeMind

A new study suggests that incorporating olive oil into your diet could help reduce the risk of dying from dementia. As many countries face rising rates of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, the study offers hope that healthy lifestyle factors such as diet can help to prevent or slow the progression of these devastating conditions.

Scientists analyzed dietary questionnaires and death records collected from more than 90,000 Americans over three decades.

The results indicated that people who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia compared with those who never or rarely consumed olive oil. In addition, replacing just one teaspoon of margarine and mayonnaise with the equivalent amount of olive oil per day was associated with an 8–14% lower risk of dying from dementia.

Research suggests that people who regularly use olive oil instead of processed or animal fats tend to have healthier diets overall. However, Tessier noted that the relationship between olive oil and dementia mortality risk in this study was independent of overall diet quality. This may suggest that olive oil has properties that are uniquely beneficial for brain health.

"Some antioxidant compounds in olive oil can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially having a direct effect on the brain," said Tessier. "It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect effect on brain health by benefiting cardiovascular health."

Previous studies have linked higher olive oil intake with a lower risk of heart disease. Incorporating olive oil as part of a Mediterranean dietary pattern has also been shown to help protect against cognitive decline.

Tessier cautioned that the research is observational and does not prove that olive oil is the cause of the reduced risk of fatal dementia.

Substituting in olive oil seems a worthwhile opportunity. We already know it helps with other health issues, and seems likely to be helping with dementia.

Look for EVOO, for the most beneficial compounds.

The drawback is that eating olive oil might turn you into a homicidal Mafioso.

First cold pressed EVOO.

More and more evidence is pointing to controlling system inflammation as a key to health.

I use olive oil only...and just about every day for something. Every other kind seems rancid.

Ever try coconut oil for pan frying?

I’ve never used it, but Avocado oil has the highest smoke point, so good for high heat cooking…

We have used mostly olive oil ever since we were stationed in Rota, Spain in the early 1980s. It tastes good.

We also only buy Spanish olive oil. According to the International Olive Council, Spain is the largest producer of olive oil. Still, you need to read the source list when buying olive oil, since most brands mix oil from different countries.

No, they only found a correlation.

The popular saying that correlation is not causation only captures part of the truth about correlation. The rest of the truth, which is not so easy to capture in a pithy saying, is that correlation can be a sign of causation. But in order to demonstrate causation, further research is necessary.

In this case, the research would be to study, in a controlled environment, the development of heart disease or dementia in animals fed identical diets with the exception of the oil type. It’s a lot harder to demonstrate causation in an observational study (which is what most human studies are).

I’m a big believer in controlling body inflammation, it causes seemingly every serious and non serious problem we have. I would encourage everyone to ask their doctor to do a C-Reactive Protein and ESR (Sediment Rate) test when they do their yearly blood work. Those tests are not normally done unless certain symptoms are present, and both tests will show if you have inflammation problems. I had off the charts inflammation markers in both tests and have since been diagnosed with Auto immune disease Giant Cell Arteritis. All caused by inflammation is the only thing the Docs know. Only treatment is prednisone for possibly 2 years. So keep the inflammation in check kids.

What caused the issue?
Did you have poor exercise and nutrition habits for a long time?

Thanks.

No not really, I am a normal active guy, 63 now, never had any health problems except BP and cholesterol (controlled) until this year. I came down with Bells Palsy in Dec, just woke up with a droopy face, thought I had a stroke. Got checked out and it resolved itself in about 4 weeks. 2 weeks later on Jan 15 I was watching NFL playoffs while right here on FR talking to the guys on the NFL threads and that day I got a headache, it didn’t go away until a Neurosurgeon finally diagnosed me with Giant Cell Arteritis in April. I ate lots of Advil and Tylenol for 3 months and saw docs and got CT scans and MRIs on my brain and head and neck and finally this neuro Dr told me to get a biopsy on my Temporal Artery. A close examination found this semi rare condition GCA they call it. My cell in the biopsy specimen are Giant. I guess they are supposed to be smaller. lol.. Anyway, it’s an auto immune disease like arthritis but in you head and sometime neck arteries. The body attacks itself in some was a causes this inflammation in your temple arteries. I had never hear of GCA and neither had my long time nurse wife. If left untreated it usually caused blindness via inflammation on the optic nerve so it’s imperative to get on hig dose prednisone right away to kill all inflammation. There is no other good treatment except maybe Methotrexate and who want to take that??
