Mum slams TUI for selling sandwiches to wildfire evacuees at 'shocking prices'

She said the locals 'did all they could' to help but TUI still charged for food

A woman from Swansea has slammed holiday company TUI for making people evacuated from wildfires on Rhodes pay considerable prices for sandwiches as they flew home. Katherine Waldemar Brown, 55, from Swansea, said locals fed her and others for free and were "incredible" in comparison.

Ms Brown was on holiday with her family including her four children when they were evacuated from the Atlantica Dreams resort in south east Rhodes on Saturday, July 22. They had to sleep on the floor of a primary school where a "little army of Greek ladies" arrived with "enormous" boxes of food.

She told the Mirror: "One lady was crying and hugged me saying; ‘We’re so sorry, we’re so sorry’. I said they had nothing to say sorry for. They’d made sandwiches, boiled eggs, pastries and bought packaged food too."

But when she managed to get a flight home, she was surprised to see sandwiches being sold for "£7 or £8." She added: "I spent £40 or £50. The locals – themselves devastated and desperately worried – did all they could to help. The holiday companies were totally absent.

"The people of Rhodes have been feeding us for days for free. When we got on the plane they should have said: ‘People who have been evacuated, please make yourself known’."

BuzzDaily Winners TUI says it will be refunding Ms Brown, adding: "We understand how distressing and difficult it’s been for those who had to leave their hotels and curtail their holidays due to the wildfires in Rhodes. Our teams have worked round the clock to offer support and we brought in many additional reps to help assist as soon as the situation escalated.

"They’ve done their utmost in challenging and difficult situations, collaborating with the local authorities who managed the immediate evacuation. We relocated impacted customers in new hotels as soon as we could and have brought hundreds of people home. Our teams will be in touch with all impacted customers on their return."

Kind of like the Red Cross selling coffee and donuts during WW I when everyone else was giving it away. My drill instructors eviscerated the Red Cross to the point that 50 years later I still don’t give them a dime of my money.

The Lord gives (little Greek ladies’hospitality) and the Lord takes away (TUI’s indifference).

Blessed be the name of the Lord!

The Red Cross charged LE for sandwiches during Hurricane Alicia in Galveston, TX. That was 40 years ago. Many have despised them ever since.

They'd spend that much or more at a fast food joint and it was delivered.

They wouldn't have starved.

Just say "No thank you".

Do they normally make and sell sandwiches? If so, what is their normal price? If it is a resort company, $10 a sandwich may be a discount.

After losing everything in the Alameda fire, I was never able to get any help or even make contact with the red cross. Every time I turned around, I was getting ripped off. People think we have insurance money and everyone wanted some of it. After 2 months I finally found a motel that would let me take my cat..motel 6 dive that charged an extra $20 a night “booking fee”.

I remember reading where the Red Cross set up a trailer to sell food and coffee to workers shoring up a dike; the Salvation Army was there as well. Their girls were carry food and coffee through the mud to those working on the dike. The RC has been dead to me since reading that.

It's not a matter of cheapness, it's the Red Cross engaging in a predatory practice while no one else is. Semper Fi.

The Salvation Army used to be my go-to organization for charitable contributions, but after their International Social Justice Commision came out with their "Let's Talk About Racism" pamphlet telling whites they need to feel guilty for being white I stopped giving to them. I only donate to locally based organizations now.

Yeah, read about that but I think they pulled it back because it was unauthorized by higher ups? Dunno.

I haven't flown since Covid. The last time I flew economy, sandwiches were about $10. I am not sure what she is complaining about.

They pulled it back alright. Because of the intense backlash it sparked. And they gave the higher ups plausible deniability. I doubt anyone lost their job over this. But this is the direction the Salvation Army is headed. As the younger brain washed generation takes over, the Salvation Army will continue its drift toward the left.
