Astronomy Picture of the Day - The Antikythera Mechanism

Explanation: It does what? No one knew that 2,000 years ago, the technology existed to build such a device. The Antikythera mechanism, pictured, is now widely regarded as the first computer. Found at the bottom of the sea aboard a decaying Greek ship, its complexity prompted decades of study, and even today some of its functions likely remain unknown. X-ray images of the device, however, have confirmed that a main function of its numerous clock-like wheels and gears is to create a portable, hand-cranked, Earth-centered, orrery of the sky, predicting future star and planet locations as well as lunar and solar eclipses. The corroded core of the Antikythera mechanism's largest gear is featured, spanning about 13 centimeters, while the entire mechanism was 33 centimeters high, making it similar in size to a large book. Recently, modern computer modeling of missing components is allowing for the creation of a more complete replica of this surprising ancient machine.

It’s anybody’s guess as to who designed and created it. I can’t imagine who it could’ve been, unless it was someone extra-terrestrial.

I’ve always been more interested in the fact that few-to-zero ancient texts refer to such a device (let alone a single drawing thereof). But it’s likely that such history was lost to Roman destruction, such was the era (Hellenistic). Who such a device was intended (recipient) is also a great mystery.

There were great mathematicians in that time. Before the church silenced Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei.

Who knows what texts may have been housed at the Library of Alexandria and lost?

Yup. The Church silenced a lot of people, Galileo chief among them. He is remembered a lot more than the people who silenced him. He has a great legacy.

That same exact attitude exists today. In fact it's probably worse, as some religions will cut your head off if ya don't go along with their religion program.

Wish I could get the hang of posting pics from elsewhere. I’m a Fred Flintstone in a Jetsons world.

The Antikythera Mechanism proves FLAT EARTH (58:41)
It's a real documentary. It's quite good in fact.

Start at 22:50.
23:09 - like a merry go round

23:19 - This is a model of the Greek cosmos, geocentric.

Yeah, it’s like falling from a tree and losing all of one’s childhood memories. Another fine gift from the Islamic world.

If we can see unknown mechanism photos, why can’t NASA just post some high res UFO hardware pics?

NASA is still operating under the Zer0 mandate that they outreach to the muslims to show how much they contributed to bring white people out of the stone age.

53:14 - Just like on Michael Wright's planetarium model.

Which is geocentric.

Looks a bit like my lawnmower.

Funny, just yesterday I was looking at it on Google maps. "X" marks the spot.

It's the Twin Pines Mall, or Lone Pine, depending on the time.

With a little imagination, the Antikythera Mechanism became the dial of destiny:

The Antikythera was built by Archimedes in 213 BC and said to be capable of locating fissures in time. At some point after its initial creation, the dial was split in two with one half captured by the Romans along with the Grafikos, a cipher which led the way to the other section of the device that had been laid to rest with Archimedes in a secret tomb.[1]

https://indianajones.fandom.com/wiki/Antikythera

Some months back I checked out the Hebrew title of the movie:

אינדיאנה ג'ונס וחוגת הגורל

It's the same as in English, but the interesting part is the phrase for the mechanism, "the dial (chugah) of destiny (goral)"

It's a word play on "Chag Purim", because the Megillah documents that the holiday was named Purim after Pur which was the lot (ha-goral):

Esther 9

24 Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot [ha-goral], to consume them, and to destroy them;
25 But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,

Grafikos, a cipher which led the way to the other section of the device...

The Nazis are the modern "analog" to Haman & Sons.

Even the Apollo 11 ticker tape parade provided cover within this drama.
