India has banned non-basmati white rice exports to curb domestic inflation, raising fears of further increases in global food prices just days after wheat and corn prices were sent climbing by Russia’s termination of a key grain deal.
The immediate ban, introduced after heavy rains hit domestic crops, follows the failure of a 20% duty on international exports introduced in September to curb foreign demand, which has soared after extreme climate conditions hit production in countries.
India is the world’s largest rice exporter, accounting for more than 40% of global shipments. While the ban does not apply to higher-grade basmati rice – India’s best-known variety – non-basmati white rice accounts for about 25% of exports.

And for those that do not understand or have failed to pay attention this year was already the highest deficit of rice since 2006/07. The world was already 8.7 tonnes short.
The United States USDA is predicting a 21% increase in rice production for NEXT season.
While that sounds like we'll be fine, remember unless the government steps in...that rice will be sold to the highest bidder on the global market.
Hope everyone is preparing for a very rough ride, I have a feeling we ain't seen nothing yet.

Thailand could use the boost. Personally I find Basmati is an inferior grain to the Thai jasmine variety. My ex liked a mix of the two so I went with the American wild rice which is essentially a grass seed.
Remember the 2020 Covid COSTCO Riots? This is worse.
Indians are fighting over bags of rice at COSTCO. Convoys of carts full of 50 lb bags were seen heading to check out.
In the US?
This will not curry favor with India’s allies.
AFAIK East Asian rice varieties are not the same, so this should have little effect in China or Japan.
“...food price rises”
Shouldn’t that be MORE rising food prices?
It that 8.7 million tons short?
In countries which have let their populations grow beyond the capacity of their agricultural output, people will starve.
Only a small fraction of countries produce more calories than they consume.
I agree. I find Jasmine superior also. And I do have room for a lot of that short grain Cal Rose sticky sushi type rice. T
Depends on what I’m making. It’s funny, my wife looks at beans and rice as a survival food. I look at it is going back to my childhood.
The growing season in the northern US and Canada is longer and extends farther north (if global warming is true).
Are farmers allowed to take advantage of that?
Or are EPA like rules on who, how and when they can till the soil preventing it?
*important growing regions in the US have been hit by unusually hot weather and lack of rain*
It’s water management. Could California’s Central Valley fill the void?
If our water management was working no one would notice the government is doing it’s job. It just makes it easier for the left to look for other soft targets.
Imagine the amount of feces in that rice. I have found the Indians to be about the dirtiest people on the Planet.
India has a fixation on maintaining a “trickle-up” economy, one built entirely from within, so they won’t be beholding to foreign interlopers.
Which is the second biggest reason (after the caste system, which was outlawed in 1947 but still is the cultural law of the land) they have such massive poverty.
