Time to ditch the burgers? Eating meat creates FOUR times more greenhouse gases than being vegan, study finds (only 7.51 years left)

The summer holidays are nearly here which would normally mean there's never been a better time to fire up the barbeque and line it with beef burgers.

But a new study shows you might want to swap them for meat-free alternatives if you want to do your bit to save the planet.

University of Oxford experts say eating just 100g of meat per day – less than a single burger – creates four times more greenhouse gases compared with a vegan diet.

The researchers now want to see prompt policy action from government and organisations to trigger 'dietary shifts away from animal-based foods'.

Previous studies have already suggested there are personal health benefits from ditching a meat diet, including reduced risk of heart disease.

The new study was led by experts from the Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) project at the University of Oxford, which is working to understand the 'health, environmental, social and economic effects of meat and dairy production'.

'Our dietary choices have a big impact on the planet,' said lead author Peter Scarborough, professor of population health at Oxford's Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and LEAP project investigator.

'Our results, which use data from over 38,000 farms in over 100 countries, show that high meat diets have the biggest impact for many important environmental indicators, including climate change and biodiversity loss.

'Cutting down the amount of meat and dairy in your diet can make a big difference to your dietary footprint.'

Scientists have long been vocal about the huge carbon footprint of humanity's love for meat, fish and dairy, especially beef.

Animal agriculture contributes to global warming because of the methane, nitrous oxide and carbon emissions of livestock and their supply chains.

What's more, deforestation to make way for space to rear cattle reduces the...

Feed a pig, eat pork.

>>Eating meat creates four times more greenhouse gas than being vegan.

>>Cows are vegan

I create a lot more greenhouse gas from beans than I do from burgers. I suspect I’m not alone.

So the question becomes, “Did you just fart, or did you get someone else (the cow) to fart for you?”

And BEANS....................

They'll never give up that "Full English Breakfast" (complete with a bowl of baked beans).

As as long as it is a fart. Who cares who owned it? Cows farting, I don’t know so much about. Horses farting, I do.

A vegan food economy would cause millions, if not billions, to die. Meat represents long-term calorie storage that insulates the world against the ups and downs of plant-based agriculture.

Our just-in-time food delivery supply chain keeps prices as low as possible but makes food accessibility more volatile, especially for the poor. Governments should be protecting their citizens by budgeting for long-term food storage to stabilize food supplies, but politicians always have better things to spend money on, like themselves.

Bovines allow land unsuitable for crops to produce food.

Greens take a lot of water to produce.

I bet vegans fart just as much as the cows they didn't eat would have done.

Every acre of wetland, lake and ocean emits as much methane as a cow.
Every wild grazing animal, every ant and termite, all bacteria that consumes rotting plant matter, every volcano, every leaking gas field, exploited or not, emits methane.
If methane was as bad as they say it is, we would be dead already.

>> Do you know how much methane cabbage creates?

Yeah I sure do, we run our GAS COOKSTOVE (in your face, climatistas!) on my methane. Mrs. Tick’s methane runs the demand water heater. ;-)

I have no problem eating vegan burgers. The trick is, training the vegans to jump into the meat-grinder. . . (evil grin)

Well, since the major greenhouse gas, CO2, no longer has any effect (if it ever had one) on temp so bloody what?
CO2 temp impact levels off at 400ppm — after that it no longer can increase temp and only serves to dramatically increase plant production.
So, CO2 increase improves plants — which ought to make the vegans happier. Except, there is no such thing as a happy vegan.

As to methane impact? Beef has never given me .......”gas”. But, beans? Geesh.

But lab grown meat is even more harmful to the enviroment.

Lab-Grown Meat’s Carbon Footprint Potentially Worse Than Retail Beef

“humans are omnivores”

And a big burger is the perfect omnivore diet. We get beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard on a nice sesame seed wheat bun.

I am considerably more efficient than that! I can make 10 times the amount of gas than a puny shriveled-up scrawny vegan.
