The mayor of Newport, Oregon, has been forced to step down after sharing a meme on Facebook which referred to Bud Light as “tranny fluid.”
Dean Sawyer, a former law enforcement officer, resigned from his position on Monday after Oregon Public Radio revealed that he had shared a number of memes that had been considered “offensive” in a private Facebook group.
The memes, which were shared in a group for current and former law enforcement officers called “LEO Only,” poked fun at transgender individuals, immigration, and other hot topics.
One such meme directly referenced the recent controversy with Bud Light and transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, showing a picture of a box of Bud Light captioned with the phrase: “I called AutoZone to order a case of tranny fluid and this is what I got.”
Since experiencing widespread controversy for parenting with influencer Dylan Mulvaney in April, Bud Light has suffered a significant drop in sales, with some weeks seeing a decline 31% over the previous year.
Another meme shared by Sawyer showed transgender swimmer Lia Thomas speaking in a post-race interview, with the meme implying Thomas had said “I won that woman’s swim race fair and square, if they don’t like it they can suck my dick.”
CM Hall, a city councillor and LGBTQ activist, said the memes were “punching down” and “further marginalising the marginalised” communities. “It’s contributing to harm and division,” she said, adding that she was “embarrassed by the Mayor’s hurtful online comments and mockery.”

So this is where we are. You are not allowed to tell a joke, even a private joke ,about any liberal or leftist sacred cow ,such as transgender people.
Somebody once said something,to paraphrase, that you know who controls you by knowing who you are not allowed to tell jokes about.

My opinion of social media is on the harsh side ie social media is for folks who doubt their own self worth, people who need affirmation from strangers to feel complete. Now I make exceptions for folks who use social media only to keep up with friends and family.
Having said that I ask: when will people who public positions of any kind realize that social media should be used only to announce your run for office, when your next speech will be, and to announce that you are quitting public service. Nothing else should be announced, commented upon, or discussed on social media.
Period.
Why apologize? Tell the joke over and over on the news, and to friends and enemies. Bud Light is Tranny fluid, that is a good one.
The decision is easy, since the alternative may be getting fired.

Of course there is nothing to keep it private. The point is he posted on private and should never have even apologized let alone resign. No courage, none. That kind of weak capitulation hurts everyone
I don’t know if you’re attacking me or supporting.
But the point is, there are “private” groups where the posting only appears and cannot be seen unless you are an accepted member of that group.
HOWEVER, you can take a posting from that group and post it for anyone who is connected to YOU (“friends”) to see (“sharing”). You can be a “private” person or a “public” person, but that doesn’t matter if one of your “friends” doesn’t like it or further shares this “offensive” material.
Bottom line, “privacy” is pretty thin on FB, but technically it exists. But it’s thin because you can share things around so that someone finds out who doesn’t like it.
