Farewell Ping to the Challenger...................
Will not be missed. Next on the chopping block, Japanese racing style motorcycles
UAW built, I don’t care
Except, redline starts at 6,500 rpm. Cute.
and follows the wasteland and the search for the precious fuel
If the Challenger is such a winner, why is it going away?
Because it won’t catch my 2016 Cadillac CTS-V 4 door sedan, and I love my 2 crotch rocket Yamaha RZ500’s
A four-door Charger doesn’t do anything for me.
Eric Peters’ blog is great reading. He has good insight on a number of topics. Interesting to see the ambivalence in some of the comments here. Cars like this are going away due to government fiat. They are being replaced with soulless electric transportation appliances. Enjoy the future I guess . . .
Because at the price point, there just aren't enough buyers every year to keep the production line open and it doesn't have enough of a following at a high price point to go into a niche line like the Corvette.
It's not new; the early Dusters / Demons, Challengers / Barracudas and Charger / Roadrunners were never manufactured in the same number as their GM counterparts:
Buick Apollo (Chevy Nova design)
Buick Century / Regal / Skylark / GS
Chevy Camaro
Chevy Chevelle
Chevy Malibu
Chevy Monte Carlo
Chevy Nova
Oldsmobile Cutlass / 442
Oldsmobile Omega (Chevy Nova design)
Pontiac Firebird
Pontiac Grand Prix
Pontiac Tempest / LeMans / GTO
Pontiac Trans-Am
Pontiac Ventura (Chevy Nova design)
...and let's be honest, the car's current legacy is having someone stealing one and doing donuts in an intersection in a ghetto neighborhood. It's not a legacy of a real muscle car out racing on the roadways.
Don’t remember Pontiac. Too young at the time.
Pontiac, (born c. 1720, on the Maumee River [now in Ohio, U.S.]—died April 20, 1769, near the Mississippi River [at present-day Cahokia, Ill.]),
(Did have a ‘64 Grand Prix)
All these cars will be getting less and less.
The federal government is pushing EVs and that means they will regulate these high performance gassoline vehicles out of existence.
Will be the last time you can get the 6.6 liter. What’s that a 392 that’s supercharged. I am guessing they will make the 5.7 package that’s really good drive train. I have a 2007 RT charger with 190k miles and still running great. Keep it seviced. And they will make the V6. But the next big boy will be the 440 with a 6 pack or something. Been waiting for them to bring back the 440 motor. I doubt dodge will quit making the muscle cars. I see to many big boys in the road. 2024 maybe the 440 7.2 liter monster. For the right price of course.
The same kids that poo-poo these muscle cars want to tell us how fast their 0-60 EVs are.
As I recall the Trans-Am was downgraded to the 305
Maybe just California
There’s a recent YouTube dashcam video of a sheriff down south responding to a car chase in one of these doing 160 mph on backroads. While impressive to watch that behavior is insanely dangerous to the officer and to the public. This kind of bull**** will continue until a mother and her kids are killed by a speeding (to put it mildly) cop in a race car. Then everyone will stand around looking sad and trying to justify their unjustifiable behavior.
Hard pass for me...not interested in garbage Chrysler products. If it was manufactured after 1969, I’ll leave it.
Well hell - I just remodeled my kitchen, so I guess I’m out.
Comparing a modern car with EFI and computerized everything to a smog-strangled late 70s car is not a valid comparison. After 1970 big V8 s lost a lot of power due to emissions regulations, and technology was a ways off from regaining the lost ground.
As a comparison, my friend’s moms ‘69 Caprice with a 350 made 300 hp. The ‘77 Impala we had with the same engine made 150 hp.
☹️
“Unfortunately, you can’t get a manual transmission with the 3.6 V6 (a manual was standard with the last Pontiac 400 in the ’79 Trans-Am). An eight speed automatic is the only transmission with this engine. Even so, it is just as quick to 60 – which it can do in 6.3 seconds”
6.3 is that right? I know it is a heavy car, but that isn’t that impressive. It only has about three tenths on my 201 HP Elantra GT Sport.
