The US Secret Service is seeking a driver who killed one pedestrian and injured at least two others while fleeing a police traffic stop near the National Mall in Washington DC.
The shocking incident occurred shortly before 1.30pm on Wednesday, when uniformed Secret Service agents attempted to pull over a vehicle near 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW, an agency spokesman told DailyMail.com.
Lt. Paul Mayhair of the Secret Service Uniformed Division said federal agents with the division tried to pull over the vehicle after spotting its expired registration.
'The suspect indicated that they would stop the vehicle, but then quickly fled southbound on 17th Street NW,' said Mayhair in a statement.
While fleeing, the driver ran a red light and struck several people walking through the intersection, fatally injuring one of them, he said.
The victim who died was a 75-year-old man, who was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but did not survive, according to NBC4 Washington.
Two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, the outlet reported.
The driver remained at large on Wednesday evening, and an alert has been issued to law enforcement agencies in the area to be on the lookout.
The alert describes the suspect vehicle as a blue 2006 Honda Accord with Virginia tags 8718BE.
The tragic incident unfolded just steps from the National Mall, the iconic park adjacent to the White House and US Capitol building.
More than 25 million people visit the National Mall each year, according to National Park Service data, and on any given day it is packed with tourists from around the world, as well as the many federal employees who work in nearby buildings.

Yes... Strange.
Maybe they wanted to ax the driver a question, and needed probable cause, so they wouldn’t be called racist.
Anyone hear what the estimated street value of the WH Coke Caper was?
There has to be more to this than expired tags.
Agreed

It’s ridiculous to stop a vehicle for an expired tag. That’s really where they should just send a ticket through the mail. The police are partially responsible for the death as well.
Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, plotted the stunt in the culmination of a six-month plan to 'seize power' from the government, charging documents alleged.
There were no injuries in the May incident. Kandula remains in federal custody facing a charge of depredation of property of the United States, and is next due in court on Thursday
Were any of the persons killed/injured the intended target(s), collateral damage, or “messages”?
What the hell is the SS doing chasing down exoired plates? Is that in their federal job description?
“There has to be more to this than expired tags.”
Think about that concept. If they knew something else worse they would have surrounded the vehicle with 20 units, 100 officers, two helicopters, machine guns, and grenade launchers instead of just a simple traffic stop.
It was reported as a traffic stop because of bad tags... Everything else is after the fact...
