A new ban on daytime homeless camping legally took effect Friday in Portland, but one wouldn’t know it by walking around the City of Roses.
Tents spilled over sidewalks and those who have made their homes on public property say the new policy isn’t likely to create meaningful change.
“It’s bulls—,” Michael, who has been homeless off and on since the ‘90s, told Fox News bluntly. “I’m tired of moving. They’re gonna have to make me move.”
The city council passed the ordinance with a 3-1 vote last month, changing city code to only allow people to camp in nonrestricted areas overnight, so long as they dismantle their camps each morning.
From 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., people are prohibited from blocking access to Portland businesses or sidewalks with tents.
Camping is also banned in city parks or within 250 feet of a school, childcare center or city-operated homeless shelter.
The new rules took effect July 7, but neither the city nor police have begun enforcing them.
Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office said the city is planning for a “summer of education” and will make a formal announcement when enforcement begins.
“Over the next few months, we will be focused on education and outreach – ensuring all outreach teams, City employees, [police] staff, and others have clear and thorough information on this new ordinance,” Wheeler said in a statement.
One man who was recently in prison for stabbing another man said he hopes homeless folks refuse to let authorities enforce the ban.
“What I think would be cool is if we stood up and stood as one, make sure that they don’t make us take down our tents or whatever,” said the man, who did not wish to be identified. “If they want violence, then give ’em violence back.”

Gas, lighter.
Liberals have gone from “Black Lives Matter, Defund The Police, Resist” to “Obey The Government”
LOLOL...HE IS TIRED of it? Cry me a river. Where are those tiny violins...let me look.
He is "moving"? How long does it take to put your homeless crap in a shopping cart and push it down the street?
If that's Fox News' effort to garner sympathy, it's not working with me.
I couldn't find a tiny violin, so we'll have to settle for this lass playing a sad song...
Near where I live about 1 block away at a street corner there was a homeless encampment. It was cleaned up earlier this year but 1 person remained. That 1 person now has over 20 shopping carts in a row filled to the brim and covered over in plastic on the sidewalk and a makeshift blue plastic tent to live in. The business’s at that corner must be complaining to deaf ears and the apt building half a block away with a small park in front as well. LA is sending the homeless to the San Fernando valley next door and up in once peaceful Chatsworth, canoga park area. In short the democrats do not care to hear any complaints.
LOLOL...so Ted is going to "educate" the NORMALS how to enjoy their new "unhoused" neighbors? I found a copy of Ted's "education" syllabus:
Reading this thread, I can’t help but think NYC is doing a good job of keeping the campers off the streets.
But of course they are being housed at expensive hotels (including the 1,000 rooms of the Roosevelt, where Republican headquarters used to be years ago). Of course we are all paying for that, not just New Yorkers, since federal funds are involved.
The hardships we are facing are garbage strewn all over the sidewalks and other public places, which New Yorkers had overcome before the big invasion, a flooding of medical offices so bad that I was recently told I had an appointment for September 26, and just plain unfamiliarity with a big crowded city, manifested for one instance by Walking Backwards, which sounds petty but can be dangerous.
I’ve already mentioned the horn blowing, which sometimes sounds like everyone’s trying out for a part in a film about NYC. We got polite about horns long ago.
I think it would be nice if Adams issued an information bulletin about these local laws.
But of course the worst is yet to come.
They voted for it, if they can’t chase them out by creative means, they deserve it.
Instead of defunding and firing police officers, they should have started a new branch of the gov’t and made them tent zoning inspectors or latrine officers.
We have one homeless guy in the county(officially) and he lives near the Appalachian Trail(which is basically homeless people out for a walk). He’s OK but they keep having to move him because we don’t know what to do with homeless people.
He doesn’t get a vote on where he goes
Good Idea, sic the IRS on them. I bet not one of them included all the free stuff in their 1040. (sarc)
It will never be solved as the homeless are cash cows for more money.
Very good
Damn...why didn’t anybody think of that solution before? It’s so obscure, such a hidden secret that it’s hard to stumble upon.
You’re going to be arrested for hate speech for that post urging personal responsibility. Don’t you know victims cannot take any responsibility for their situation?
But yeah, clearly a racist here. And a bigot, and someone who wants the planet to broil like baby back ribs...
That’s Lindsey sterling I think
She’s a very active violinist. Check her out on YouTube. I get tired just watching her
We really should be ashamed for not doing our part to east their burden. Shame on us.
The whole population of Portland will be living in tents and cooking on campfires (if they have anything to cook) at the rate they are going. Of course the Union EPA would come around arresting people for air pollution.
87,000 well-armed IRS agents happen to be free at the moment. Just an idea...

Really? Who are the targets?
