Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived this year, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively....
Simply put: In determining the 50 best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, you must draw a line in the sand — even if that’s the sands of Arrakis. To that end, a few rules have been set.
No fantasy-centric superhero movies will appear here, and the same goes for those space-borne fantasy franchises “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” For an action, horror, or animated movie to make it onto this list, it needs to be firmly rooted in sci-fi origins and make notable use of the tropes and themes therein.

So—you didn’t even read the title, much less the article?
Omg, Palmer Eldritch?
“How did Interstellar not make the list?”
Nobody can figure it out?
Arrival
yep...
Lool.
Yup. Someone did the same drugs as Phillip K. Dick and made a movie.
#49 on the list “Coherence” is a good movie. Took me awhile to spot the mcguffin.
We recently watched Ender’s Game. My wife and I liked it well enough, but she HATED the ending (the VERY ending).
I liked the ending - it made one think. The kid had some very good points, and I think he was correct. Of course with any sci-fy film you have to suspend reason to a certain degree. (Food supplies, etc.)
As a kid in the early 50’s, the original “The Thing” scared the bejesus out of me and my pals.
I readily admit I missed the caveat about the movies from 2000 on so that is on me.
As far as the list it still sucks. Nothing on the list is close to being good and I see would ever make a real list of greatest Sci-Fi movies of all time.
Haven’t seen those.
Hard to find. TCM is the best bet.
When has it ever been a requirement on FR to read the article before commenting? :)
Interseller is one of the best sci-fi films ever, just turn it off at the point he falls into the black hole - everything after that is pointless.
NOTHING on the list is close to being good? That’s an ambitious statement. How many of them have you seen?
Ok, I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest this:
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
It was everything the newer Stars Wars movies were not: Fun. It also had a very Shakespearean ending.
I like good SciFi, but I think you would have to be a gay Hollywood insider on Fentanyl to like “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.” I would rank it among the five worst movies I have ever seen. Maybe even worse than “Mission to Mars”.
Sorry but what is TCM?
In my experience you don’t always have to see turds to know one is near.
