Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived this year, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively....
Simply put: In determining the 50 best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, you must draw a line in the sand — even if that’s the sands of Arrakis. To that end, a few rules have been set.
No fantasy-centric superhero movies will appear here, and the same goes for those space-borne fantasy franchises “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” For an action, horror, or animated movie to make it onto this list, it needs to be firmly rooted in sci-fi origins and make notable use of the tropes and themes therein.

Turner Classic Movies. Old movies. It’s about the only channel I watch. Everything else is almost unwatchable to me.
“I liked Forbidden Planet.”
Ditto
I don’t accept the premise that these poll creators have the ability to rank these movies according to a “best” category.
Sci-fi movies are good for different reasons, action, premise, adventure, cute chicks in tight outfits, etc, etc.
My wife watched a few episodes of the Snowpiercer TV show. I thought the whole idea of operating a very large train at high speed in an extremely cold environment with no track maintenance whatsoever was unbelievably idiotic.
“There’s a new ice age. We should try to establish some sort of sheltered environment, maybe underground, where we could survive as long as possible.”
“Nah, let’s all ride around aimlessly on this big old train. Much more fun.”
We don’t get that channel but we do get this retro channel that shows old stuff.
And another fun one:
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Yeah, best scary monster ever!
Underrated IMO.
I’m surprised you think there’s nothing sexually objectionable about Everything Everywhere All At Once. You must have forgotten that there’s a significant sequence where multiple characters are jumping through the air attempting to land on a butt plug.
As for my favorites off the top of my head, without looking at my movie racks:
-Interstellar
-Ad Astra
-Inception
-Oblivion
-Edge Of Tomorrow
-Minority Report
-War of the Worlds
-Blade Runner 2049
-Pacific Rim
-Godzilla
-Kong Skull Island
-Shin Godzilla
-Tron Legacy
-Ready Player One
-Star Trek (kelvin timeline)
-Europa Report
But it’s not science-fiction.
It’s Kelley’s Heroes:

But I did enjoy it! :-D
Although probably the best of the Star Trek movies, sorry you're so limited to cartoonish sci-fi. KAHN!!!
I’m glad you mentioned Minority Report and Europa Report. I liked both of those.
forbidden planet!!
Well, that was different...and funny.
“Attack the Block” doesn’t belong anywhere near this list. 3rd rate at best.
Transcendence was interesting if not entirely original. A little hard to believe the mind of Depp in digital form could access every computer in the world so quickly. I kept thinking how could his primitive although brilliant mind become so powerful so quickly? He was still just Depp. Guess I’m missing something.
I agree with your assessment. The kid made the movie.
Shin Godzilla is great, the take on Japanese bureaucracy really worked especially with the subtitled captions flashing by at super speed. I didn’t expect it to be as arty as it was for a Godzilla movie, but it all worked well.
Freegards
2001 will never be beaten.
All this gen-xyz CGI crap makes most like cartoons, maybe the point.
Kahn was good fun, but not so much sci-fi as situations.
