RIO RANCHO — New Mexico would require automakers to deliver more zero-emission vehicles for sale in the state under a rule proposed Monday by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
The proposal would require that 43% of the 2027 model year cars and trucks sent to New Mexico for sale meet strict clean car standards, officials said. The percentage would climb to 82% for 2032 vehicles, with the changes phased in over a half dozen years.
Under the proposal, automakers would also have the option of buying credits from other companies to help meet the 43% requirement for 2027 electric vehicles.
Electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles would count toward the percentage. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, however, would not.
Lujan Grisham, a Democrat who won reelection last year, unveiled the proposal Monday during a news conference at Chalmers Ford in Rio Rancho, surrounded by electric vehicles.
Her administration will propose the clean car standards to the Environmental Improvement Board, which is expected to hold a hearing and accept public comment before acting on the rule later this year.
Lujan Grisham described it as a critical way to combat climate change in a large state where cars and trucks — not mass transit — dominate transportation. New Mexico is the fifth-largest state by geographic size.
Larry Behrens, a spokesman for Power the Future, an advocacy group for workers in fossil fuel industries, said the governor’s announcement ignores troubling signs about the market for electric vehicles, such as recent layoffs announced by car manufacturers.
“This is another misguided proposal that begs the question if the governor’s electric vehicles are so popular,” Behrens said, “why does she have to force them on us? These arbitrary goals with arbitrary deadlines have real consequences as the cost of vehicles rises on New Mexico’s families.”

What if at least 47% of potential car-buyers don’t want an electric vehicle?
New Mexico is one of four states I haven’t visited but I didn’t realize it was filled with big cities with strong electrical infrastructure.
I mean 43%.
Nice. A zero emission car does not nor will ever exist. Not if we’re talking actual ZERO. 😁👍
LOL
So I have spoken
So it is written
So it shall be!
These loons think they can just order a billion dollars’ worth of infrastructure to appear overnight.
They live in their own, very twisted, reality.
It’s a 5.5 hour drive from Las Cruces to Taos.
Now imagine doing that in +100 degree temperatures.
With the air conditioner running.
No thanks, dying in the desert heat doesn’t sound like much fun.
So EVs are out then, right? They are most certainly not zero emissions vehicles. They are in fact”deposited elsewhere” emission vehicles.
Estimated benefit to the “climate” - ZERO!
LOL
Zero-emission vehicles, eh? Good luck with that... mind you, if they want to draw the dotted line around the vehicle in a way that makes it a net-zero calculation based on what is considered in and out (excluding the manufacturing of everything), I can play that game too. For my Chev Avalanche, I choose to draw my dotted line around everything except the tailpipes. There, I’m now as much zero emission (perhaps even better) than any EV car.
Why not 44% or 73%? Christ, just make it 100%, and while they are at it ban gasoline sales.
Those cars will rot on dealer lots. Fortunately he didn’t say 43 percent had to be sold.
I see there are many portable vehicle or personally carried GPS Satellite emergency locators to signal if you are in trouble and have no cell service. Looks like most in 300 to 500$ range on Amazon.
At 43%, they figure no one cares. So they pass the law. Then they raise it to 89.5% and penalize anyone who has a gas car.
They use a number like 43% to make it look like it’s scientifically determined rather than made up out of thin air like it is.
So the clueless DemocRATz in NM are going to require their citizens to purchase only the most expensive POS stuff on the market, eh? Yeah, that’ll work. Nope, it won’t, because the Repulsicans haven’t got the brains or b*lls to expose the DemocRATz for who they are.
NM is full of Democrats, let them all “eat cake”. They can walk or ride bikes. It will be educational.
