'I'm working my butt off': Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites back on the hook for student loans

The Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan on Friday, a measure that would have wiped out nearly half a trillion dollars in debt for millions of Americans.

The decision will impact the nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites that have federal student loan debt -- a total that adds up to more than $20 billion.

Sid Bagley is one of those people who took out a federal student loan. He went back to school at age 45 to get a business administration degree and better himself.

“I hated my job so much I made the initiative to go back to school and do something better,” said Bagley.

But going back to school wasn’t cheap.

"I pay about $220 bucks a month in student loan repayment, which is also the same amount my rent went up this year,” Bagley said.

Since then, he’s been working hard to pay those loans back.

"I can see that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, it's just having to work so hard and so much just to get there."

Biden's plan to shave $10,000 off that total meant a lot to Bagley, but Friday morning's Supreme Court decision turned that around.

Those opposed to loan forgiveness say the decision is fair, however.

"How on earth can anyone say it is fair for them to pay for other people's education?" Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden tweeted.

Bagley disagrees.

“They think we're privileged, when — look at me, I'm wearing safety yellow and stuff, I'm working my butt off, I work three jobs just to make a decent living for myself,” said Bagley.

President Biden said Friday afternoon that he is not giving up the fight to forgive student debt, saying his administration is working on a new plan as payments are set to resume in the coming weeks.

Y’all need to lighten up these folks. You know degrees in gender studies don’t pay much.

Bet you didn’t do the spring break foolishness either.

Spring break, I went home and worked. But after two years of learning more about farming, I quit school to farm full time. Which was working out well,... until Jimmah Cawtuh came along.

Kept farming, but worked off the farm for 16 years trying to pay debts. Still struggle to say anything good about Jimmah (a sunday school ‘teacher’ that supported abortion).

The difference in PPP loans was government forced business to shut down, or else face fines and even jail. Student loan borrowers were not forced by government to take these loans. Also, what happens to the next loan borrower? No one has addressed why college costs are high. You are going to still have incoming freshmen taking out these loans. Are they going to expect forgiveness in 10 years time?

Cut worthless programs and the staff, insurance and OPEX expenses all go away. You won’t need those students who do nothing more then aspire to senior barista at Starbux positions.

If you went to college and work multiple jobs afterwards, you sucked at going to college.

“ Liberals run all these universities, they should think about lowering their costs”

Biden and tge media say nothing about this

My school was 1100 per year when I attended. Same school is now 38,000 per year

Before housing

That’s higher than inflation. Why are these institutions raising costs at higher rates than inflation on people whose brains are not even fully developed when they sign the contract?

Why did people allow Obama to give this debt to the government.

It’s not going to get paid back. The interest is outrageous.

This is a ridiculous money making scheme for the liberals in academia

Look at the salaries of the administrators

Look at the abundance of administrative positions comparatively. It’s likely twice as much as it was in the eighties

People are outraged that the president of United AL took a private jet this week. Does anyone look at the salaries of university presidents? Why are et they vilified?

...and I hiked ten miles to school, uphill both ways, every freaking day?

And we ate dirt, and we were thankful for the dirt.

And if You were Lucky, You got a few worms as protein for the day!

“ Best to line up jobs before leaving college. There’s always job days where companies get out a table and flyers, even the CIA.”

As a teacher and an aunt I advise people to study for skills before they study for enhancement

However the schools are very responsible for ensuring kids have employment and that they study for employment

These themreads are always so hateful toward the student. That’s not helpful

“ However what we don’t need is gender studies majors. Now that is BS. You take out a loan on that degree you can pay it back.”

See people never blame the school for this crap

Why should people who never went to college, people who went to college and paid their loans, or worked their way through college, pay for your loan?

“The Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan on Friday, a measure that would have wiped out nearly half a trillion dollars in debt for millions of Americans.”

“No, that is a lie. This measure would not have wiped out one dollar in debt. It simply would have transfered that debt over from the people who agreed to pay for the education they received over to the national debt of all Americans. “

Debt never disappears The working stiffs pay for all this crap.

However, the universities and any worthless staff need to get as frugal as the borrowers, they must stop ripping them off

“Some of these college graduates have to work at both Starbucks and McDonalds to pay off the debt they incurred by partying at College for 8 years.”

Not all kids party but it is a bad situation. We know some kids who come over from China. Brilliant. No siblings btw. They worked hard to get there. They would not dream of partying. They are amazed. To see it from that pov is awful

“To me, this wasn’t fair that I had to pay mine, but they were going to get a pass?”

Totally unfair. Also the article says, “...nearly half a trillion dollars in debt for millions of Americans.”

No, it just transfers the debt from a single group to the rest of us.

Went back to school at 45 (to better himself); went back to school to get an MBA (to better himself); went into debt (to better himself). How’s that working out for you, Sid? Instead of one job, you are working THREE!! Freaking moron!!
