Artificial sugar replacement aspartame, found in thousands of 'diet' replacements - like Diet Coke, Extra chewing gum and even toothpaste, to be declared 'possibly carcinogenic to humans'

Is this the beginning of the end for low-calorie food and drink? Artificial sugar replacement aspartame, found in thousands of 'diet' replacements - like Diet Coke, Extra chewing gum and even toothpaste, to be declared 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' Leaked report says WHO cancer group could declare aspartame carcinogenic

An artificial sweetener added to thousands of fizzy drinks, chewing gums and low-calorie foods will be declared a potential cancer risk, a bombshell report claimed today.

Aspartame is set to be listed as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' in a World Health Organization reclassification, according to insiders. It follows a major safety review into the artificial sugar replacement involving 1,300 studies.

Particular products containing aspartame — which entered the market in the 1980s — include Diet Coke, Dr Pepper and Fanta, as well as Extra chewing gum and Muller Light yoghurts. Some toothpastes, dessert mixes, and sugar-free cough drops also contain it.

The move will send shockwaves through the global food manufacturing market, with some of the world's best-loved brands affected. A huge push to crackdown on sugar over the past few decades has led to the mass usage of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

Experts immediately questioned the International Agency for Research on Cancer's (IARC) decision, calling the classification system used by the WHO's subsidiary body 'dumb' and arguing that 'the dose makes the poison'. Cancer Research UK explicitly states that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame don’t cause cancer.

Meanwhile, industry bodies claimed the IARC review consisted of 'widely discredited research' which 'contradicts decades of high-quality evidence'.

Similar WHO-backed cancer warnings slapped on red meat, working overnight and using mobile phones have faced criticism for sparking needless alarm over hard to avoid substances or situations.

Wasn’t aspartame flagged as carcinogenic something like 40 years ago?

The FDA refused to approve it for years.

Donald Rumsfeld forced them to see the error of their ways.

The only antidote is to eat lots of eggs, butter, and well marbled red meat...

Right on.

Artificial breastmilk, Bad for babies.

Artificial fat, bad for people.

Artificial sweeteners, bad for our health.

Artificial meat? They expect us to believe it’s good for us with their track record on making artificial foods?

They are stupider than they think we are.

Aspartame has been banned in the US twice and twice politics freed it. It gives me a screaming headache. It’s in Hawaiian Punch and most chewing gum. I read labels and won’t buy anything that contains it.

zero calorie sweeteners is just dumb to consume.

sugar is 16 calories per teaspoon.

The problem is you are eating food loaded with sugar and sweeteners. It’s in everything - read the labels.

So much so your tastes have changed. This is why they have to dump 8 or 12 teaspoons worth of sugar into a soft drink. If you were not eating sweetened foods all the time, you that would taste WAAAY too sweet.

I went off the sweeteners several years back and I can taste things better now. In a way it’s like cigarettes - your taste ability is modified down.

First time I had it in a soft drink, I got a severe headache and threw up. Thought it could have been from something but rinse and repeat the next time. Same thing when I drank some years later and again after that. Yeah, took a while to learn that lesson.

Aspartame the Silent Killer (link to article below).

(From the article):

I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis...The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Many people were be being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!

Actually, isn't everything possibly carcinogenic? At least, everything I buy has the caveat, "may cause cancer if you use this product in kalifornia." Lucky for me, I'm not in kalifornia.

It’s in Hawaiian Punch and most chewing gum. I read labels and won’t buy anything that contains it.

And options for phenylketonurics have dwindled dramatically.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sure it will and so will breathing, eating lettuce, drinking water, sleeping at night and... you name it.

We are ALL born to die one day. Accept it.

I bet this “group” believes the jab is safe, too.

I think it in the 80’s that Saccharine was reported to cause cancer in laboratory rats.
I considered it a GOOD thing.
I hate rats.

It gives me terrible stomach cramps. Hubby and I use Stevia in our tea and it doesn't give me any bad side effects.

Oh! No!

Just like saccharin and cyclamates.

Ban ‘m! Ban ‘m! Ban ‘!

==

IIRC, a study came out in the 90s that one would have to consume something like 800 cans of soda PER DAY for the level of artificial sweetener to be carcinogenic.

Just more scare and fear. If it hasn’t killed you yet, it will.

I’ve been consuming “Equal” and other products containing aspartame since it came on the market. Will I quit using it NOW, simply because of some study? Never!

Right, and I’ll quit using Equal when they pry that blue packet from my cold, dead hands.
