This is the second time I’ve written you; the first was when you were at that other place. Anyway, I’ve noticed another automotive styling feature worth discussing, and perhaps you have some thoughts: I’ve been seeing cars with factory two-tone paint jobs, often a black roof over a white body. Will this become a trend?
Might it become more than black and white? Are we in for a return to ’50s paint schemes?
Sajeev answers:
Aside from the usual, bespoke creations for the top-tier demographic, we are absolutely not returning to 1950s levels of multiple-toned paint schemes. Cars are too damn expensive to make these days, and adding features is a balancing act: An automaker must consider sales volume and profitability. The market is too price-sensitive and competitive to alter that balance, and two-tone paint is the equivalent of dropping a lead weight on a balance beam scale . . . well, on a scale perfectly balanced with the features mandated by the government and the features demanded by consumers.

Two tone pain jobs have a classy look, assuming a good color combo. I didn’t think they ever went away though.
I have a last gen Town Car in two tone. I think it works well with the lines of the car; I do wonder how the more angular, insectoid looking cars common right now would work in two tone.
What I do hate is this battleship grey color that has been getting common in the last few years. I don’t understand how anyone think that looks good. It will age like pea green did in the ‘70s.
Is it just my imagination or have white cars become more common lately?
No. The frame and floors are fine. Lower fenders are rusty. All I need is a spare $10,000 or so to get in in 8/10 condition.
I did have the white part painted. So it does look better than that these days.
An ugly car, undoubtedly. However can you think of a car that particular combination would look good on? It looks like it is trying to be a hornet.
There were so many great looking cars made in the 50’s.
That car has faggot written all over it. I’m really surprised that BMW ever made a car that ugly.
“It’s weathered a bit and faded but intact”
Nowadays thats called “patina”.......clear over it and get on with enjoying your ride. 👍
Can whitewall tires be the next trend?
So, we bought a boat instead. Happy with our decision.
My father had one of those, except it had white instead of pink.
Oh do I agree!
More common lately? Don’t think so. White has been most popular car color for years, maybe 30% of cars in the US and worldwide.
Gray is the color much more common lately.
Autos are appliances now. Who craves splashy colors on a toaster?
Excellent call. Jeeps were birthed as military vehicles and the CJ and Wrangler body types always look better with subdued tones. IMHO, when they're bright red, yellow or God forbid, purple, they look too much like toys (unless they belong to a fire department as a S&R vehicle).
My Willys one is a dark gray. I still have the body tub and fenders to go.
The CJ7 is a color called Laguna Blue.
Major work is on hold for a while, there are last year’s medical misadventures to pay off.
I’m making progress.
In too many ways I am more like Adrian Monk or Felix Unger than I care to admit.
