Pennsylvania’s largest coal plant, and one of its largest polluters, to shut down
State Impact Pennsylvania ^ | 6/16/23 | Susan Phillips

Opened in 1969 as a base load power plant designed to provide electricity to large areas of Pennsylvania and New York, the Homer City Generating Station in Indiana County is shutting its doors. Part of a nationwide trend, Homer City could not compete with cheaper Marcellus Shale gas and more efficient combined-cycle power plants.

Coal fired power generates about 196 gigawatts of energy today, down from 313 GW in 2005, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. Although coal at one point provided the majority of power in the U.S., it now generates about 20%. Natural gas generation today produces 40% of the country’s energy. For the first time, wind and solar energy generated more power in the U.S. in the first half of this year than coal.

It's coming very soon, we will be living in the dark, because the leftist nuts hate coal, but are orgasmic about unreliable wind and solar.

More accurate headline would be...

Pennsylvania’s largest coal plant, and one of its largest polluters AND MOST RELIABLE POWER PRODUCERS, to shut down

Maybe you’re right, but probably not in this case. Western and central Pennsylvania is blessed with having two massive natural gas deposits — the Marcellus and Utica shale formations — underneath it. Coal is being displaced by gas as the primary source of electric power in the U.S.

Maybe they’ll let Fetterman blow out the fire during the shutdown celebration.

In the words of the astute freshman senator from Pennsylvania

“I,I,I,I,I am fracking for, I,I,I, coal support, never, dependant energy, yes that is what said!

Way to go Pennsylvania at least he is not from Turkey.

Uh but Gov. Shapiro hates, natural gas, although I think he smells his own flatuence(farts) to stop global warming.

The coal is, still, being mined, in PA. Being sold to China.

They hate natural gas too.

You’re both right and wrong on this thread, as I read.

The democrats fought marcellus tooth and nail, while ignoring NY border towns voted and petitions to secede from NY and into Pennsylvania.

The new Yorkers wanted that sweet, sweet gas money from their property and marcellus terminated a few pipes right across the river so they could see that potential when they looked at Pennsylvania.

If you own gas rights in PA, You’re set.

Politicians must be blowing more wind than usual.
A few lip stitches may help.

Not one word about where the 196 megawatts that will be lost will come from. Kinda important to know since the gov’t is promoting EVs but has no plan for the infrastructure needed to serve them.

Except not so much at night or on calm days. But at only 13 times the cost of coal!
