I was just reading a prank letter about an arborist that cultivated a bunch of giant sequoias in order to take revenge upon a city.
So, it got me to ask. Are we allowed to cut down giant sequoias, if somebody planted one in yard?
It would grow like bamboo, so you probably have to do it quickly to avoid a disaster. But I'm just wondering if you would be allowed to chop it down because you didn't plant it and it wasn't natural.
Within city limits (depends on the city) can be a problem.
Post the article please!
Interesting question.
I don’t know but I’m sure someone here has insight.
Following replies.
Neighbor of mine, cut down 2 redwoods about 50-70 year old because they were taking up space and dropped cones everywhere. Neighbor on the other side freaked because she planted shade plants and they were ruined. Uproar but then it ended after he argued he pays the property taxes not her.
No sequoias are protected don’t do that
I’d love to. Reddit and Snopes are not recognized sources for FR.
The best I can do is post the letter itself, but not the source.
Hi, I’m an arborist. This means I am a professional in the cultivation, management, and study of trees. I love trees. I think they’re some of the most beautiful, majestic, ancient living beings on our planet.
Today I am here to tell you a story of death, new life, and revenge. Three years ago today, the city council of Redondo Beach California ordered the death of my 30 year old pepper tree. It’s roots had begun to penetrate the pavement in front of my house. The city noticed and issued the death warrant of my tree. They furthermore made me pay for the damages to the sidewalk and for the tree removal.
I loved Clyde. I’m beginning to get older, and planting something that I knew would live well beyond my lifetime was something very special. I took very good care of him. I drained his soil, I gave him a crutch to lean on when he was a young lad, and I watched him grow. Just as Clyde was becoming a strong healthy individual, expanding his root system, developing a canopy, and making his own way in life, the mayor took it upon himself to uproot my beautiful child.
Mayor Steve Aspel. You killed my child.
For this, you will pay. Two years and seven months ago, I secretly planted 45 California Redwoods and 82 Giant Sequoias in various parks, yards, and state properties around your city.
Today, each of their root systems will be at least 30 feet in diameter, and deeply embedded in the soil. You may have noticed the trees growing in front of city council, or that new one that sprouted up in your backyard. That’s a Giant Sequoia, and its growth will begin accelerating rapidly in the coming months.
You killed Clyde, but I have replaced him with over 100 living giants. And giant they will become. In a few years, they’ll begin breaking heights of 100-300 feet and live well beyond 2,500 years. That’s way longer ago than Jesus was born. To remove even one of them at this point will cost well over $1500... And I’m stiffing you with the bill, just like you did to me 3 years ago today.
Good day to you, sir. May your city be overrun by trees. And may Clyde rest in peace.

Girdle the tree. When it is dead cut it down. No-one will notice the girdle.
Yes, because it self identifies as a weed......
Are we talking the US or Canada? In the US I’d bet that the answer is “no:. Given my many experiences of seeing huge lumber trucks heading south on I-91 in Vermont...all of which have Quebec plates...Canada’s forestry laws might be different.
A giant Sequoia would be your entire yard.
Love it. Great story.
Why cut it down?
Because it would be in your yard and you will have roots sticking through your basement if your yard isn’t big enough to accommodate it.
She had no right to tell him what to do on his property.
It’s a plausible enough story to actually have it happen. Nobody knows that you are cultivating these things and they might become 100’ tall before anybody really notices what was done. It would also be thousands of dollars to remove each tree.
It would also require all the nutrients of your yard, so you couldn’t have any other plants because they would starve.
I moved into a place. Had a 50 pine 6 feet from the house an Another 30foot popular next to the garage. Insurance had me cut it down. It shaded not just the house but about 6 other trees. Took em a few years to die. Felt sad. Liked all those trees. They got burnt real bad the first year
I’ve planted several hundreds of redwoods and harvested hundreds. I really don’t understand the question.
I know. It is pure Jonny Applebee’s like genius. I stealth plant all the time.
