WASHINGTON (TND) — Hawaii's second largest volcano -- Kilauea -- started erupting early Wednesday morning following a three-month pause, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, also known as USGS.
"Klauea volcano IS erupting," USGS noted on Twitter, adding that the eruption started just before 4:45 a.m. HST.
The agency shared video of "the west rim of the crater at approximately 6 a.m. HST. Telephoto view shows multiple active vent sources and lava flooding the crater floor" within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, which is located on Hawaii's Big Island.
USGS said their Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) detected a glow in the volcano'ssummit webcam images. They said associated volcano hazards -- such as high levels of volcanic gas -- were immediately evaluated.
The opening phases of eruptions are dynamic," the USGS noted. "Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halemaumau crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. The activity is confined to Halemaumau and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses."
USGS said HVO will continue to monitor the activity closely and report any significant changes.
Kilauea erupted from September 2021 until last December. For about two weeks in December, Hawaii’s biggest volcano, Mauna Loa, also was erupting on Hawaii’s Big Island.
After a short pause, Kilauea began erupting again in January. That eruption lasted for 61 days, ending in March.
A 2018 Kilauea eruption destroyed more than 700 homes.

My daughter and her family are vacationing on Maui. They have plans to go snorkeling in an inactive volcano. Let’s hope it stays inactive.

Fortunately they moved back to the States around 2012. My kids are much more adventurous than I ever was.
We visited Kilauea last year. What a magnificent sight, even though it was barely erupting.
Maybe we can stop the eruption by throwing in tax dollars to plug it up?

I guess the people who bought homes around the volcano did not listen to George Carlin.
I live within an hours drive of the volcano.
Your advise on Webcam is spot on.
There are so many tourists there,
that there is no parking available.
Best time to go is after 9 P.M. park is open 24/7 so I
recommend you go after ten PM and before five AM.
That way you avoid crowds, work traffic and the Hawaii
road repair school activities( AKA state and county road work)
I forgot, if you go wear good boots, ground is hot and have a headlamp.
