I Forced my Teen Daughter to Gut a Fish to Learn a ‘Life Skill’ — Now my Family Is Angry
New York Post ^ | June 8, 2023 | Allie Griffin

A father forced his grossed-out young daughter to gut a fish he bought at the store to teach her a “life skill” — and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so after his wife grew angry at him.

The 38-year-old dad of two girls, 13 and 10, posted in the popular Reddit group “Am I the A–hole” to ask that exact question after teaching his older daughter to debone and descale a fish against her will.

Fair_Moose_4755 explained that he and his wife have been teaching their girls a variety of “life skills such as cooking, cleaning and car maintenance” and recently the family went on a camping trip. His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

Civil society will collapse in a few years.

Grown women get grossed out by gutting a fish, stepping on a spider, etc. It is never too early to start them on their journey to being a responsible adult.

LOL! I have male relatives who threw up when they had to change a baby’s diaper, or were grossed-out helping to care for an invalid relative.

Many men have never finished the journey to ‘responsible adulthood’.

Re: "I had to clean a gas station restroom nightly."

Yeah, because someone paid you to do it.

The Father and daughter can negotiate a payment for learning how to gut a fish.

The daughter would settle on some dollar number, and she would also gain essential life time negotiating skills.

Fish gutting skills?

She will probably never use them again.

What the father did wrong is ask the interweb retards for advice.

A buddy & I were going fishing early one morning when his girlfriend insisted she come along. Everyone was in their early 30s. We got the boat to our area & she wanted to drop a line. We told her she had to bait her own hook. We had minnows.
She started to reach into the bucket & he says, "I wouldn't do it that way if I was you."
I said, "Ya, those things can take the tip of your finger off."
"What do I do?" she asks.
"Use the needle nose pliers to grab one" I say.
She proceeds to attempt that & I and my friend smirk at each other.
Less than a minute later she shrieks, "I caught one!!!!"
We look & sure enough there she is, sitting in the middle of the boat, minnow bucket at her feet, with a minnow squirming at the end of a needle nose pliers.
Oh, she was blond & this is a true story.
I guess she "learned" us....;O)

Sorry but when your father tells you to do something you should do it.

So pull up your socks and deal.

As was explained to me when I was a couple years younger then she is, I could either be a contributing member of the family or a dependent.

Being a dependent is not much fun.

I used to go fishing in the Pacific Ocean. When we brought home fish to gut, we made the cat happy. She feasted on the fish guts.

I had to bait my own hooks with live worms at 8 years old or eat P & J.

In the future: gut a fish or eat bugs.

I think the father did the right thing, except they should have caught the fish.

FTA: His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

I always had to stand on the porch holding the rabbits and squirrels rear feet while Dad, who was on the ground, did the skinning and gutting.
Probably started doing it when I was only 5 or 6, but I still remember how to do it if need be.
We also took part in slaughtering hogs and steers, and killing and cleaning chickens on our grandparents farm.
It never occurred to us girls to object.

Not at all. Your food does not originate in the grocery store. It comes from somewhere. Its best if you learn where and learn life skills like how to gut a fish. You might need to sometime....or maybe you might just want to get away from eating ultra processed everything.

This is a bad trend. Asking strangers for advice on the interweb. It will all be contradictory and thereby worthless. Too bad Ann Landers is dead.

Because it is a good thing to do.

I would say 90% percent of children say No to a new experience when asked.

The large majority do not have a problem once they are done.

Telling your kids to do something they don’t want to. Sets a good life lesson.

Of sometimes one has to do, what one has to do.

I would have a hard time with a rabbit or squirrel, a fish wouldn’t disgust me I could gut a fish!! I think it is all about where you are raised and the life you experience when you are young!! For me anything with fur would be tough!!

I started hunting with my dad at 12. At the end of the day, my job was to clean the guns and clean the birds.

What could be a more basic stop on the road to adulthood?
