Elon Musk Reveals Line of Code Used to Censor Tweets Containing Certain Key Words

Twitter owner Elon Musk revealed that engineers at the social media company discovered a line of code, which was more than ten years old, which appeared to suppress tweets containing specific words.

During an interview with The Babylon Bee, editor-in-chief Kyle Mann asked Musk:

“One of the craziest things you did when you took over Twitter was start releasing the Twitter files,” he began.

“Who takes over a company and then says, ‘Look, how horrible all this stuff is that’s going on’?”

“If we’re not going to expose the things that were done wrong, why should people believe us in the future? That’s why we’re trying to be as transparent as possible,” Musk responded.

“Don’t take my word for it – literally look at the algorithm; you should be able to recreate the results that you see on Twitter using that algorithm.”

“So we’re trying to make sure that everything is brought to light, not just so there’s no hidden layers or anything,” Musk added.

“We just discovered last week some hidden layer of censorship that was written in 2012.”

The Twitter owner said that “‘censorship’ is probably the wrong word” to describe the code; Twitter had a list of words it would use to evaluate Tweets.

“If you put ‘suck’ in a tweet, then it does not get amplified on the platform,” he explained.

“And that was literally code from, like 2012. We found this relic of code last week.”

Musk later confirmed the line of code was being applied to all tweets, with a thousand words on the list used to suppress tweets.

The news comes just days after Musk pulled his platform out of the EU bloc’s online censorship project, angering EU officials.

Musk pulled Twitter out of the EU’s “Code of Practice,” a pro-censorship project aimed at tackling so-called “disinformation” online,

The move comes after months of mixed messages from Elon Musk, who stated that he wanted to support free speech while insisting that Twitter would support the EU in its censorship program.

I suspect the posts that had the word “suck” were posts Musk would generally not want propagated.

I suspect putting links or graphs in a post are favorable indicators for propagation.

Musk and Murdoch are on the same team.

Foreign born billionaires are stuck together like glue.

Whether Soros is may be debatable.

But if he ain’t stuck to them, his positions are not that far from either.

It was a surprise. I just made an offhand comment on how climbing Mount Everest is no big deal anymore on account of thousands of people that have already done it. I also mentioned about all the trash they are leaving up there (see below) for others to pick up.

It must have gone viral because the comments and likes were coming in so fast I couldn't keep up with them. I got some grief too, for saying that, but that's to be expected on the Internet.

“rolled”

Dear Representative Maga:

Your victory margin in the last election was 13,475.

You have about 45,000 old age SS recipients, 200 100% disabled veterans, ... and 800 nurses funded mainly by Medicare and Medicaid in your district.

You’ve talked about opposing my deal with Biden.

I suggest you do less talking and more thinking, most especially about your career prospects.

Dear Speaker Kevin McCarthy

I'd bet even Stevie Wonder could find 10's of billions in wasteful/corrupt spending.

I was banned temporarily about 6 months ago, then 3 days ago I was banned permanently. Why? who knows. I suppose telling the truth about trannies, and black thugs. Twitter is not free at all. It is ultra woke, they just hide behind the facade of free speech.

“They’re not Marxists,they’re Maoists.”

I see. So the boot on my throat is on a Maoist’s foot, not a Marxist’s.

Big difference!

They hate farmers. The end.

These sites have working ignore functions.
They should be moderated liberally.
Instead as the ignore function appeared so did Govt Censorship Industrial complex.
These people look to be offended to stifle all dissent.
Ridiculous.

If I put out a tweet it is seen by eight people. They still shadow ban plenty. You never know why some people thrive and others go to jail for following ten people. It’s still arbitrary as hell and a dead zone for some of us.

“Maoists that hate farmers-it is preposterous.”

Maoist hatred de jour is wondrous and changeable. All that matters is that the Rulers acquire more money, guns, and power and that the non-rulers end up with less money, guns, and power.

Hatred is versatile and powerful when used by smart Maoists, Marxists or Nazi’s or whatever new name for the same old evil others come up with.

Hmmm...not sure I agree. I think there are less neo-Nazis in the world than we are lead to believe. Now if you said it would be over run with Muslims making death threats, I agree that it would. (as is the case for facebook). Still not sure there should be moderation. Unless the moderation is delegated downwards. Sorry I don’t use Twitter so I have little idea how it works. But I think it would be a good compromise if there are local moderators for specific pages on twitter. NOT from above.

The problem is some people just can’t think objectively and what is a threat will cause some disagreement. “I wish all Jews would just die”. IMHO that is not a threat of violence, but a liberal would argue it is. Back yard BBQ rule? Does that apply?

As I said, it’s not neo-Nazis doing it, but leftists doing it to shutdown a forum that’s not to their liking, and discredit their enemies in general.
