I’ve got moderate hearing loss. Those probably won’t fit my lifestyle, but that’s what the VA will approve, I’m pretty sure.

The equipment in a hearing aid should cost about $5 dollars.
So now that its over the counter the price should come down under $100 soon.

Wherever you get the hearing aids from, be prepared for them to get lost easily. Gone are the days when they're as big as your big toe. Now they're small, tuck above your ear, and are gray to hide amongst gray hair.
And my mother would lose hers on a daily basis until we tethered them to a clip she puts on her shirt.

That may be now. But there is no reason in the world that manufacturing these things costs more than a few dollars. The fact that they are a medical device and will be paid for by insurance are driving the price. The worlds best microphones and earphones don’t cost a fraction of this price.

Sometimes, it might be cheaper to just invest in some ear-enhancement surgery.

My hearing aids ARE grey, and they are OTC.

They have an app to set them with, but will not work for using the phone or TV.
I chose the watch battery version.

When I went to the VA, they sent me to a local audiologist to have my hearing tested.
Then they matched the response to the individual hearing aids and programmed them.
The ear pieces were custom molded to my ears with wax impressions so they fit perfectly .....................

I’m not a Vet, so I have to pay for mine. You served, so you deserve them for no cost.
I thank you, and all other FReepers who served, for your service!

"I caution consumers not to buy without first seeing a professional. The best practice or best care is still to see an audiologist to know your hearing levels. They will help you make the best decision." So you see the professional, and he tries to sell you the $4-5 thousand dollar set.
My first set cost over $4 grand. My next set was free. I had not known that my VA benefits included hearing aids until my primary care doc clued me in. I had never applied for VA medical because I felt that there were lots of other guys who needed it more than I did, who were harmed by their service and deserved the help.
Saving the thousands of dollars does assuage my guilt some!
