In really upsetting and disturbing news, the entire population of black sea urchins in Eilat was wiped out over a couple of months. This is an environmental and ecological disaster, not to mention something that will surely harm the tourism industry in Israel’s southernmost city.
Eilat is known for its coral reef. The reef is located down the shore from the city, about half of the way to the border with the Sinai. Black Sea urchins live around reefs. They come out at night and are best known for their long black and sharp spines like those on a porcupine. Bathers are warned not to touch them as their sting is painful.
Sea urchins in general, and black sea urchins specifically, are considered key species essential for the healthy functioning of coral reefs. Following the discovery of their deaths, an urgent report describing the current situation was submitted to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and emergency steps for saving the coral reef are now being considered

Black Urchins Matter.
Obviously white sea urchin supremacy.
Also FTR, a land urchin is a hedgehog. Sea urchins are related to starfish.
It means the Gulf of Eilat is raaaacist.
it means that someone discharged something into the seawater that killed the sea urchins.
They just don’t know what that something is—much less the someone who did it.

Are these ones edible? I know sea urchins are food for a number of marine critters.
Couldn’t be the raw sewage and untreated industrial waste discharged into the sea from Gaza or anything, could it?
Yeah, I may be wrong isn't there an urchin in Japan that has to be prepared by an expert urchin cutter, if not that urchin is deadly.
Is this racism?!
Yep. And it’s Elon Mollusk’s fault.
Yep, and climate change made 'em do it.
Are you thinking of Fugu or Puffer fish?
That's it.
Sounds right.
I’ve read that sea urchins are beneficial to coral reefs because they help control the algae growth.
What? What? Eilat’s lil black urchins are being killed? Are they being lynched? Any cross burning? Night riders? Is the klan active in Eilat? Where is the NAACP? Does the SPLC know about this?
I wouldn’t have thought it, but looking up the Phylogeny, it does seem they’re somewhat related.
They are pretty sure it is a disease. Apparently it was first noticed in the Mediterranean, where invasive species of Urchin suddenly died off.
Pollution from Gaza is unlikely to make its way to the Gulf of Aqaba. The whole of southern Israel is in the way.
