I had a small apartment and bought an aquarium, I did such a great job of making it beautiful inside that I decided to skip the fish, people almost never noticed there were no fish in it but they loved the watery scenery and bubbles.
It was very low maintenance.

My neighbor’s cat. Loves playing in our garden, does no damage, then leaves.
I find all of the creatures you’ve named far more appealing than the common democrat.
I have two pythons. And two diamondbacks. A Gold Cup. And a Combat Commander. Those are the closest things to “pets” I need.
It’s like having a child. What good is “low-maintenance”?
My mom has a wild cat in Israel that just walked into her house when it was somewhere between a kitten and and adult and decided it was going to live with us. About six months old at the time.
And by “wild cat”, I mean a African wildcat, Felis sylvestris lybica, that is the origin from whence domesticated cats were bred. Gray, a bit larger than a typical cat, and a fierce killer who loves to be where her people are.
I suppose that is how the process started in the first place.
Anyway, she is very regal, but friendly, and loves to kill all the critters around barn, provided she gets to sleep on a cozy bed inside the house. Doesn’t venture far.

The operative phrase in the term “pet” is (not surprisingly) “pet.”
How do you “pet” a fish? Or a brine shrimp? Or a snail? Or a hermit crab? Or an aquatic frog?

I still have a pet rock (rescued, not bought). It’s much more portable than a brick but also easier to misplace/harder to find.
I actually spent hours in an after school pet rock club in the 70s. Such sweet innocent times.
My first thought as well, a pet rock.
