The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
They did a story on this organization in the latest issue of Garden Gate Magazine. What a great way to help kids and young adults with special needs. It’s a county-wide program that could easily be duplicated.
“Special Growers is a program of Special Opps, Inc, a 501c3 Tennessee Corporation with the mission of providing job training and employment opportunities to disabled adults in Blount County.
In 2010, a few parents of special needs young adults were hit with a question, ‘What’s next for my child after high school graduation?’ Unfortunately, the answer was, ‘there really isn’t much.’
Therefore, Special Growers was launched with the support of many community partners and individuals to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for our disabled staff to learn job skills, gain confidence, and prepare for their future careers.”
Out of Blount County, Maryville, TN - where I was planning on retiring until Beau showed up. ;)

Golden orb weavers usually like to set up near Sedum in my yard. (The floral border I think its called.) They snag the insects that come to pollinate the sedum. I like them too.
Looking for ideas on how to support patty pan squash. First time growing it and I am running out of space. Don’t want to use a pole. Something more like waist high so I can trail it around. Maybe like a chicken wire laundry basket. Or maybe someone here has experience.
Here you go! This shows Zucchini which is pretty close!

Here is another.

Do a search for "Growing squash vertically" and see what else you get!
Thanks, Diana, that is great to see! Good workers who appreciate a Job!
Good! you have some irrigation! (You do not appear to have a lot of sow bugs. They are eating off the lower leaves of my pole beans! )
Thanks Pete I looked at both of those. With patty pan and other vining types I always thought they had to have ground contact along the way. I have just grown winter squash and I plant it next to the garlic and past that the asparagus so the vines have somewhere to go. If that is not the case I may have to go out and buy a tomato cage. Otherwise I just have stakes. Thanks Pete.
Ground contact allows the plant to grow additional roots. My father would cover vines with dirt as they spread along the ground. A good thing to have case you get damage from squash vine borers. I guess that will be something you need to monitor as it grows. Good luck!
I put some finely chopped straw around its base and hammered a stake in. In the barn I found one last piece of chicken wire and made a tube and dropped it around the plant. If it gets away from me or needs dirt contact it’s next to the Pak Choi which will be done and harvested by the time the squash plant gets big.
I am glad you brought this question up. I planted zucchini and patty pan squash today and am using the vertical with tomato cage idea. I have very little room in my garden and I think it will work!
I have never planted or eaten patty pan before. We will have a very special house guest this summer and it’s a surprise. I still gave 5 proper plants and 6 tomato plants to squeeze in. My Dad was a master at getting a lot of a small garden. He would plant a small amount of sweet corn and train his cukes to go up it. We have too many deer and raccoons to be planting corn.
Need coffee!
“I still gave 5 proper plants “
Should be - I still have 5 pepper plants
:)
I had 8 pepper plants, but incautiously left them outside but not in the garden area and a rabbit stripped them of their leaves! Trying to see if they will survive and regrow, but am starting some more from seed tonight. Shishito. Alas!
Oh no! I have 6 of them doing great, flowering. Hope they bounce back.
Hubby found this - love him - great article on seed buying, good graphic too for reference.
https://deeprootsathome.com/4-ways-to-keep-monsanto-out-of-your-home-garden/
FOR THE RECORD: Jung Seed Company does NOT have ties to Monsanto for seed production. It is all bought through private seed producers and/or produced at their farm in Randolph, WI.
The reason we get ‘lumped in there’ is that when the original founder (Great Grandpa Jung) died, the company was split between the three sons. The two (that I worked for) took the seed and garden centers operations and the third took the ‘Genetics Research’ part of the company.
Any, yes. He later sold it to Monsanto. For big, BIG money, too! (The guy has a lot of ‘personal problems’ that I won’t go into here...)
Glad you had some inside scoop I actually just skimmed the article before posting. All that’s for sale around here is Burpee. I got Livingston seeds at a big greenhouse about 45 minutes away. We stop there once a year on our way out to the lake.
I would have customers in the past, all wrapped around the axle about it and demanding answers. Usually LibTard ‘activists’ from Madistan.
And you’re shopping in my store because it goes against your values because...?
I’ve explained it dozens of times. ;)
