Why don’t more people of color ride bikes? There is no singular reason; however, safety is often cited as a primary concern. In communities of color with a high concentration of low to middle-income residents, the lack of cycling infrastructure elements, such as bike trails, bike lanes, or even shoulders, make cycling unsafe and impractical.
“The lower a metro area’s median household income, the more dangerous it’s streets are likely to be for people walking,” according to a Smart Growth America Dangerous by Design 2021 report. “This is unsurprising, given low-income communities are less likely to have sidewalks, marked crosswalks, and street design to support safer, slower speeds.”
Without such infrastructure, Black and Hispanic residents face the greatest risks. According to a Harvard and Boston University study assessing racial disparities and traffic fatalities, for every mile walked, Black people are twice as likely to be killed by cars compared to white pedestrians.
For every mile ridden, Black cyclists are 4.5 times more likely to be killed than white cyclists. At the same time, Hispanic cyclists and pedestrians experience a 1.7 and 1.5-fold risk of being killed compared to white Americans.

And cyclists riding on sidewalks, accidents just waiting to happen.
I live in a mainly white/blue collar area, there are no bicycle paths with 2 miles of me. But there are a lot of bicyclists. Haven't seen an accident here yet, might be safer driving.
My college town has bike lanes. I almost hit POC coming out of my street BECAUSE HE WAS RIDING HIS BIKE AT FULL SPEED GOING THE WRONG WAY IN THE BICYCLE LANE.
You can’t fix stupid.
Everything is Racists! That’s what I’ve heard anyways.
Cuz they steal cars...not bikes?
Why don’t more blacks swim?
The headline is a good example of how people whose focus on race are morons.
Welcome to West Pensacola, Florida, where cyclists and drivers share the roads. And now, wokesters, FOAD.
It also does not address the tax base base that makes those goodies: sidewalks, bike lanes, etc, available. Poor white neighborhoods won’t have those either.
I almost hit a cyclist going the wrong way up a street near my house (FL) at night. He obviously didn’t care to ride WITH the traffic.
I’ll go out on a limb here here. The people who hate authority and laws are the people dart all over the road without any regard for the automobiles on the road. They strut in the center of the roads and DARE you to hit them. I’ve seen this many, many times and I’m sure you have, too.
But would that behavioral origin be mentioned? Nah, it’s not their fault.
I thought it was because roads are racist.
...same reason, laziness.
Checklist for determining whether or not an article is bull****.
If: The words racist/race are used
Then: The article is total, pure, unmitigated and quite nonacademic bull****.
Simple, eh?
The lines on the road are yellow and bike lanes are lined in green. I guess the black paint kind of gets hidden.
Some of that may be true, but it’s probably because their bikes will get stolen.
In 3rd grade my bike was stolen and, racists that I’m, I never even thought about what the race of the thief might have been.
Clearly by not being obsessed about race way back when I was advancing white supremacy!
Blacks don’t ride bicycles because it is a “display of whiteness”.
Doctor: Then don't do that.
Personally, I would advise the POCs not to ride bikes. In communities of color with a high concentration of low to middle-income residents, the lack of cycling infrastructure elements, such as bike trails, bike lanes, or even shoulders, drug dealer, hos, rampaging gang bangers, needles, feces, unpicked up and rotting garbage, make cycling unsafe and impractical.
Fixed
I quit riding bicycles years ago and Cycles before that. There’s too many crazies on the road, most of them are young and they have these hot little rice burners that they speed around in partying and distracted.
I have had enough broken bones from construction accidents I do not need to have any more from some idiot in traffic.
