Steven Spielberg participated in a master class at the Time 100 Summit and announced he regrets editing guns out of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” The film’s 1982 theatrical cut includes a scene of officers chasing young kids with firearms. Spielberg edited the guns out for the 20th anniversary release of the film and replaced the firearms with walkie talkies.
“That was a mistake,” Spielberg said. “I never should have done that. ‘E.T.’ is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through.”
“‘E.T.’ was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed and I thought I would change the guns into walkie talkies… Years went by and I changed my own views,” Spielberg continued. “I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that. All our movies are a kind of a signpost of where we were when we made them, what the world was like and what the world was receiving when we got those stories out there. So I really regret having that out there.”
Spielberg’s regret over censoring “E.T.” led the Time 100 moderator to bring up recent news about Roald Dahl and other authors’ books being censored for offensive language and republished with language considered more inclusive by today’s standards.

It’s nice to see Spielberg regrets going the PC route.
I recall hearing that liberal actress Drew Barrymore, who was in ET, was one who encouraged them to delete the guns and install walkie talkies.
Well, we still see that certain old movies and TV shows are not shown anymore. Such as, old Stepin Fechit movies, “Song of the South” in particular, and old Charlie Chan movies. These never show up on cable or broadcast TV.

This is a big part of what is crazy right now. Transgenders are a case in point. I don't especially care about them. A guy wants to wear a dress and live as a woman? Fine. He wants surgery? Why is that my business? I don't chase that person. I don't yell at them. I don't hassle them. I just don't care. Go and live your life, it's just none of my business. But that's not good enough for them. They are in my face. Yelling at me. Demanding that I change my ways. I must use their new name. I must use their new pronouns. I must support drag shows for kids. I must do 1000 and 1 things, and it's never enough.
Someone is being an intolerant bully and it doesn't seem like it's me. Seems like they are demanding that I live according to their very strict and oppressive rules. And if I want to make my own decisions about how I live, well, that makes me a Nazi. Or something.

They banned Song of the South a long long time ago. You can find VHS copies on eBay, but they’re expensive and probably degraded.

I’d say his pal George Lucas actually started the trend, since he pioneered the digital editing technology to do it, and he used that tech to change his original Star Wars trilogy before Spielberg changed ET.
However, Lucas didn’t make “PC” changes for political reasons, just stupid changes based on bad artistic decisions.

It’s not going to be enough to just “tolerate” the worldly and leave them to their sin, because they can’t tolerate you in return. Anyone they see trying to live a godly life is just a constant reminder to them that they are damned. They have a vain hope that if all the godly people just “went away”, or were dragged into sin along with them, then their conscience would cease to bother them. It won’t work, but they have to believe it will, because they are desperate to avoid admitting that what torments them is inside of them, and not being imposed on them by others.
