Drinking cranberry juice has long been a mythical prevention strategy for women who develop a urinary tract infection—and new medical evidence shows consuming cranberry products is an effective way to prevent a UTI before it gets started.
A global study looking at the benefits of cranberry products published in Cochrane Reviews has determined cranberry juice, and its supplements, reduce the risk of repeat symptomatic UTIs in women by more than a quarter, in children by more than half, and in people susceptible to UTI following medical interventions by about 53%.
Cranberry juice and healthcare supplements that commonly include the fruit, such as capsules and tablets, have long been promoted as a readily available solution to ward off the infection but the most recent review in 2012, with evidence from 24 trials, showed no benefit from the products.
Professor Jonathan Craig says the real benefits of cranberry products became clear when the researchers expanded the scope of the review to include the most recently available clinical data.
"This is a review of the totality of the evidence and as new evidence emerges, new findings might occur. In this case, the new evidence shows a very positive finding that cranberry juice can prevent UTI in susceptible people," says Professor Craig.
"We have shown the efficacy of cranberry products for the treatment of UTIs using all the evidence published on this topic since the mid-nineties. The earlier versions of this review didn't have enough evidence to determine efficacy and subsequent clinical trials showed varied results, but in this updated review the volume of data has shown this new finding."

Think of how many centuries a simple, cheap therapy was called “stupid” by “experts,” yet, there have been many small studies done, and plenty of anecdotal evidence, showing it can help minimize UTI issues for little cost and effectively zero negative impact.
Doctors won’t tell patients it’s a viable option when they can give antibiotics and wipe it out. To be fair, when people present with a problem, patients usually want an immediate solution, which is a pill. However, cranberry extract, and perhaps D-mannose, a major component of cranberries, can help, and it won’t cause gut bacteria to die off as it gets rid of the germs in the urinary pathway.
My wife recently had what seemed like a UTI, for several days. A study I found on D-mannose showed it cured 90% of UTIs by the 13th day. I asked her if she was willing to be a test subject, allowing my study to end (and going to a doctor for antibiotics) if it kept getting worse. I got D-mannose from Vitamin Shoppe that day and she started the regimen.
She was getting better the next day, and by the third day (the study preloaded higher doses the first three days), she had no more apparent UTI issues.
Cochrane Reviews will never know of my added study of one, so it will have to wait until some author opines in the future on the accumulated evidence to officially change medical science. At the rate of “medical science,” that, too, could be another few centuries.
Of course, we could get a Dr. Fauci and his wife to deem an extremely experimental treatment safe for use and force mankind to suck it up, but I disagree with that sick approach.
I have known about this for 30+ years.
But Cipro works much faster.
In my experience, cranberry juice does nothing after one has actually contracted a UTI. It may help prevent it, if taken routinely; but I can’t tolerate that sour, natural, unsweetened stuff.
Give me Cipro.
D mannose is the ticket
It’s concentrated cranberry

What pharmaceutical salesman’s eh I mean MD is going to tell you about they? None. They’re too busy telling people their products have no side effects
Women have known this for decades and have ignored any in the medical community that said otherwise. Although I haven’t had one in years, when I was younger I was susceptible to UTI’s and once even spent three days in the hospital suffering from one.
After that, I followed my mother’s advice anytime I felt a twinge of pain in my kidneys, and I drank a glass or two of cranberry juice. If I caught it quick enough, I avoided the need for a trip to the doctor and a round of anti-biotics.
More than cipro, I want pyridium! The world must stop until I get pyridium!
“Cranberry products can prevent urinary tract infections for women”
Without knowing what a woman/women is how can these claims be made?
As an aside, being a self identified male aka non-birthing person. I had the pleasure of having a kidney stone a few years ago. At the time I thought my life was ending and I allowed my birthing person partner (prior to 2022 known as wife) to take me to the ER. An x-ray confirmed the presence of a kidney stone and I was sent home with a prescription for pain medication and filter to capture the precious stone.
I recalled an old wives’ tale, forgive me, birthing person’s tale, that cranberry juice was good for kidney problems. I drank a small bottle every day for about a week. To this day I have no idea what happened to the stone. I did the filter thing for 2-3 days before making the realization that this practice was stupid and just increased my trepidation of what might occur. Did the juice dissolve the stone? Perhaps Yuengling beer was the savior. Who knows? But there has been two additional times that I thought I might have a stone in the works and threw back some cranberry juice for good measure and symptoms went away.
First, does it say who funded the study? Ocean Spray? My body laughs at cranberry juice, and it did absolutely nothing to help. I’d have about 3-4 UTIs a year.
About four years ago I started on D-Mannose by Superior Labs from Amazon. I had a UTI in January 2020, but that’s it. For prevention. I take three capsules mornings of Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday; two capsules
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings.
A couple months ago I got that warning feeling and I popped five capsules at once. A half hour later I noticed it was gone. I’m not sure how it would work for actually curing a UTI, but prophylactically I’m a believer.
“Give me Cipro.”
Yes! When I do have a UTI, give me Cipro. I even bought some OTC in Belize during a cruise “just in case”.
What torks me off are people who say the only reason you get UTIs is because you’re not “clean”.
Yes. Pyridium is always in my purse — just in case. (Actually Azo’s equivalent). Haven’t needed it in three years, but it’s always with me. It doesn’t cure anything but it makes life worth living until treatment.
Yes, that is one med which is in my carry-on when I take my long trips. Just in case.
This will be silenced, no $$$ for Pharma. I’ve controlled my blood pressure with red grape extracts and hibiscus tea with great results.
Cipro will kill you. Do your research. You know what is better for humans cats and dogs? D-Mannose. A simple sugar. Safe naturally works wonders. Very inexpensive! NOW brand is quality and affordable.
AMEN! Very Affordable and I could sprinkle it right on my dog’s food if he needed it for his UTI also. Tastes great!! I always have it on hand. Great if you are a Prepper to. NOW brand is very affordable!
I carry Oregano Oil Capsules, natures antibiotic. We must start thinking alternatives we will be able to get our hands on because Times are a Changing!

Need I say more? Get your D-mannose while it’s in stock. It’s about 20 dollars a bottle that will last you 6 months or more. Like everything else it may skyrocket before You know it!
Bkmk
Sounds pretty sexist to me.
Really? I have doe my share of Cipro in my young years when I was active young single man.
Now at age 83 my heart is beating normally.
And I need ZERO prescriptions.
But I did have lots of health problems in my mid 50’s.
I got rid of all health issues by walking 30 miles every week playing 5 rounds of 18 at Royal Oaks golf & country club. Regular exercise is still keeping me out of doctor’s office and strong. May be age 100 without pains and prescriptions is possible. I gotta run....time to walk to the gym.
UTI’s in adults can mimic the beginning of dementia or Alzheimer’s. My MIL was diagnosed as the beginning of dementia bt thankfully she had a doctor who checked her for UTI, treated and within a week was back to normal.
Agree that the Chochrane studies don’t add anything.
But they are also consider the most reliable because they bring together all the various experiments and studies. Chochrane studies are a study of studies.
So they bring together all the available evidence to come to a conclusion.
If you know nothing about a subject Chochrane Studies are the safest bet.
That said I love your insight into d-mannose. Further, if you look at any container of cranberry juice—you see that its just loaded with sugar. Which can’t do anyone any good.
