Yazz Giraldo, a mother of two who is of Middle Eastern and Latin descent, is “traumatized” by the incident and believes she was racially targeted because she and her husband, Ali Moghaddam, were speaking Farsi to their toddlers.
The drama unfolded as the family was flying from Fort Lauderdale to New York in September for a Long Island wedding. Both kids urgently needed the restroom, recalled Giraldo, who tried to take the baby to the first-class bathroom closest to their seats at the front of the plane.
“Everybody else was using it,” she said, but one flight attendant barred her without explanation from doing the same.

A second flight attendant there told her there was no prohibition on using the closer bathroom so she took her son to that lavatory, according to a Brooklyn Federal Court discrimination lawsuit she filed against American Airlines.
The flight attendant who barred her from first class tried to stop her — even as the desperate child “was holding himself, he was about to lose it,” Giraldo said.
“I closed the door, when I’m inside the bathroom I start hearing the noise, ‘tick, tick, tick,'” she said of the sound of the door locking. “I freaked out. I was already under so much stress. … I started to panic, I banged on the door a few times and I said, ‘Let me out of here.'”

A few minutes later, a supervisor loudly berated her in front of other passengers, claiming “the pilot decided to put the plane under terrorist attack warning because of you.”
When Giraldo, whose baby was sleeping on her chest, tried to explain she’d been misled about the bathroom and locked inside, the screaming attendant accused her of lying.

SOMETHING DOESN’T ADD UP!
So she tried to upgrade herself to first-class and failed. Now she wants to make it a federal case.
No kidding. There must be a dozen or two videos of the incident that will reveal the truth.
But straight to the courthouse with the discrimination lawsuit. Naturally.
Anyone in Coach who tries to enter First Class will always be stopped. I’ve seen this dozens of times involving every race and gender. Sorry, the child waited too long and she’s trying to play the race card.
Agree and after working at an international airport for many years, this racism accusation is bs. When you deal with so many different people everyday, it’s not looks that are brought to your attention, but behavior.
Everything that happens in the world, has an underlying racist or discrimination background.
So say the democrats and progressives and communists.
Don’t do anything, or else, you’ll be discriminating.
In fact, don’t even leave your home or breathe or drink or eat. If you die, it’s because you’re a racist and didn’t want to live in this world full of people that look different and think different from you.
She lost me, right there.
Why were they talking to their toders in a foreign language?
Some of those first class attendants are pretty snooty.
I was upgraded to first class once because coach was overbooked...got a bit of attitude from the female attendant.
Because that’s how you make your children multi-lingual. It’s a common practice.
Do airplane bathrooms lock from the outside?
Don’t the rats 🐀 always say, if it exists, it’s racist?
Yep - all it takes is letting ONE person use the First Class lavatory and then EVERYONE AND THEIR MAMA demands to be allowed to use it as well.
Exactly.
There’s too much missing from this story and when someone paints the one person as a pure as the new driven snow victim who was “only” doing whatever, there is usually MUCH more to the story.
Yes but you can unlock them from the inside. They are allowed to be locked from the outside so that they can be closed from being used if they are trashed, filled with biohazard or inop.
My 2nd flight in my life was from London to NYC after arriving from Mumbai on my maiden flight. To make long story short, I was upgraded by kindly agent at London Heathrow to first class because plane was fully booked. I do not remember any dis-respect by stewardesses. By the time plane landed in NY, I was completely wasted due to my seatmate ordering a drink every time he had one! I never had any alcohol before that flight.
Anyways I had enough of flying after 30 hours chasing the sun. So I caught a cab in NY city and asked the driver to take me to Greyhound Bus station. When he heard I was 20 year old foreign student, he gave me a tour of 5th Avenue and refused taxi-fare. Good old days!
Thanks, you answered my question before I asked it. I had thought maybe the stewardess had turned the lock so the door would show the bathroom was occupied.
So a person can’t actually be locked in the lav and the lady is lying.
Also, since she speaks three languages including English, and she saw that speaking Farsi bothered some people, why didn’t she stop. It’s because she wanted to make a scene.
