Even The Oakland A’s Are Leaving California
Daily Wire ^ | April 20, 2023 | Tim Meads

It looks like even the Oakland Athletics are joining the mass exodus of Californians fleeing for a better life.

On Thursday, one of the MLB’s most iconic franchises announced that it has purchased land in Las Vegas, Nevada, after searching and failing to find land for a new stadium in Oakland.  Now, the A’s will be building a gigantic $1.5 billion, 35,000-seat stadium in Sin City for the ball club, according to ESPN.

“For a while, we were on parallel paths [with Oakland], but we have turned our attention to Las Vegas to get a deal here for the A’s and find a long-term home,” team president Dave Kaval told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “Oakland has been a great home for us for over 50 years, but we really need this 20-year saga completed and we feel there’s a path here in Southern Nevada to do that.”

The move has the full support of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, but Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao isn’t too pleased about it. The city has now officially ended talks with the team to keep them in the city.

“I am deeply disappointed that the A’s have chosen not to negotiate with the City of Oakland as a true partner, in a way that respects the long relationship between the fans, the City and the team,” Thao said in a statement given to ESPN. “Yet, it is clear to me that the A’s have no intention of staying in Oakland and have simply been using this process to try to extract a better deal out of Las Vegas. I am not interested in continuing to play that game — the fans and our residents deserve better.”

I was wondering if the Sacramento Kings would be thinking of moving to Vegas.

Las Vegas, eh?

I remember when the A's moved to Oakland from Kansas City, I am aware they started in Philly.

So the beat goes on.

The Angles want to leave Anaheim too.

Arte Moreno wants the land next to Angel Stadium and is using the Angels as a leverage to get the land. If he doesn’t he’ll move the team to another part of OC, like Irvine.

Do they have a specific location or locations in mind?

Are they still located near Disneyland?

This will be the fourth city for the Athletics. Can't they make their minds up and just stay put?

I used to go to A's games by riding BART to the nearby station--there was a pedestrian bridge to get to the ballpark.

When the NBA hosted their all-star game there I figured they’d be the first in. Now they’re gonna be the last. Even the MLS might beat them there (one of the 2 finalists for an expansion team). How things have changed, I remember when the sports world pretended there was no such place.

I have been to Fenway about 6 times. Back then the bleachers were $2. !994 or so. I always bought and ate an Italian sausage sandwich outside before entering Fenway. Lots of fennel in those sausages. There were always 6-10 sausage sandwich vendors outside.

They should build this place with a roof that can open and close depending on the weather. Vegas is a tourism city. I could see flying there for a weekend series. Taking in a couple games on a weekend.

Retractable is the way to go. There are plenty of cool and even cold months in Las Vegas. But during the summer you need the roof up and the A/C on. You are right about baseball being a solid part of the Vegas entertainment mix. Moving there is a no-brainer. Baseball has 80 home games. Football just has 9 or 10. So lots of Pro Baseball games for the tourists and the natives.

My wife got me one of those musical birthday cards this year. The song was “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang. Boy did that bring back memories from A’s games. LOL.

They’ve been wanting to move out of Anaheim for quite a few years now. The city of Anaheim has been a pain in the ass to the team and it’s stadium. No, I don’t know where they’ll end up.

The Bronx borough courthouse is a few blocks away from Yankee Stadium, so there’s that.

Kings are pretty popular. I don’t see them moving anytime soon.

A young lady in front of me in line at Walgreens today had a two year old in tow. The kid was putting on a show making friends with us and she mentioned that his name was “Oakland”. Who names their kid Oakland? LOL.

There’s absolutely nothing positive about Oakland. Democrat rule has utterly destroyed the place.

Actually there's nothing negative about Oakland except the Democrat mis-rule. With proper government, the East Bay could be amazing.

The Sausage Guy is still there right outside the Bleachers Bar on Landsdown Street. Right across from The House of Blues.

The Cask & Flagon is still on the corner of Landsdown. Game On is across the street from that.

The just opened the MGM Foundation room on the other corner of Landsdown Street. That bring in entertainers that can fill a hall with 1000 seats or so.

The other thing is Yawkee Way on the home base side is all closed down to traffic. You go through security and have to show a ticket to get in there. My boss/company has tickets to about half of the home games. So, I usually go once or twice a year. Maybe more this year because the Sox SUCK!

It used to be amazing before a succession of greedy dipshit democrat mayors and city councils destroyed it.

A 35,000 seat stadium is just the right size for MLB avg attendance. No doubt they’ll sell more tickets in LV than in Oakland.
