Hurts' average annual value of $51 million is more than any other player in league history
Jalen Hurts has parlayed his breakout season into a history-making contract. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $255 million, according to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The deal, which reportedly includes $179.304 million in guarantees and a no trade clause, makes Hurts the highest-paid player in NFL history in terms of average annual value.
Hurts was heading into the final year of his rookie contract. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts helped the Eagles clinch a playoff berth in 2021, his first year as the team's starting quarterback. Last season, Hurts turned in an MVP-caliber season while winning 14 of his 15 regular season starts.
In the playoffs, Hurts completed 66.7% of his passes with three touchdowns and no picks. Despite dealing with a lingering injury, Hurts put together one of the best individual efforts by a quarterback in Super Bowl history in Super Bowl LVII. Against the Chiefs, he threw for 304 yards and a touchdown while completing more than 71% of his passes. Hurts also ran for three scores to tie Terrell Davis' 25-year-old Super Bowl record.
Hurts follows the Giants' Daniel Jones and the Seahawks' Geno Smith as the third quarterback this offseason to land a lucrative extension. Cincinnati's Joe Burrow and the Chargers' Justin Herbert are also expected to get extensions before the start of the regular season.
Of course, there's the ongoing contract drama between Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Jackson recently asked for a trade after Baltimore placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on the former league MVP. Jackson is reportedly hoping for a deal that will include at least $200 million guaranteed.
Comical....
Cleveland set the standard for bad signings with Deshaun Watson. The Lamar Jacksons are trying to make this the new normal. Hurts is a very good QB who is still young and improving. The guys who sign in a year or two will be paid even more because franchise QBs can get a % of cap space, and that keeps going up. (except during Covid)
Of the top 5 of 6 highest current QB salaries, this may be the best deal. Lamar wants all money gaurateed and even more. He needs to be cut.
Does the contract have a “dog fighting” clause?
Now all the Eagles need to do is sign Jordan Love away from the Packers, and they’ll have the perfect quarterback duo, Love Hurts. (It does, but that’s a separate issue.)
This is good news for Joe Burrow as he has entered negotiations on a new contract with the notoriously cheap Brown Family which owns the Bengals.
At least Jalen seems to be a pretty solid guy on and off the field.

Well, it seems like he might be a misandrist.
Regards,
It’s been a long time since the NFL has had such a bumper crop of good young QBs:
Mahomes
Hurts
Allen
Burrow
I think you will see Herbert, Lawrence and Pickett very quickly join the ranks of elite QBs, as well.
LAMAR HAD HIS CHANCE AND BLEW IT.................
Who will pay their salary of the bottom drops out of the economy and no one can afford to see the games?
Good for him.
Make it while you can.
Enjoyed watching the Eagles last year. Solid QB. Solid team.
The TV contracts pretty much cover the salary cap. And sports tends to be pretty recession proof. At least in the big leagues. Minor leagues have issues because they tend to be in small “one industry” towns, so if that industry takes it on the chin they’re hosed.
“ Does the contract have a “dog fighting” clause?”
I see what you did there.
The Arkansas Razorback football team once had a player with the last name Dicke. Another named Goode and another Love.
They were sitting on the bench once at a game in a certain order. You can figure it out.
Well, as long as they can sell enough Bud Light to cover it... :)
Herbert is already there. 3 seasons of record TD’s, yards, completion %, etc.
Upon hearing this news, noted drama queen Aaron Rodgers retired to his dark yurt where he was heard to weep quietly into his Jets embroidered pillow.
Signed,
Lions, Vikings, etc....fans
