PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating after someone broke into a trailer containing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of dimes in Northeast Philadelphia.

The discovery was made around 6 a.m. Thursday in a Walmart parking lot on the 4300 block of Byberry Road.

Police on the scene say an estimated two million dimes, worth $200,000, were stolen. That's an increase from an earlier estimate of one million dimes

Dimes were found scattered from the Walmart parking lot to Woodhaven Road.

Action News has learned the truck driver picked up the dimes from the Philadelphia Mint on Wednesday but then went home to get some sleep before a long drive to Florida.

"This is common practice - to pick up a load going to Florida and go home for the night, get to sleep, and get on the road in the morning,"

Sadly, he hanged himself.

I remember when it happened. I was listening to WWDB and Irv Homer the drive time talk show host had caller after calling saying "I'd have take the money too" or "I wouldn't take the money."

Some of the money was never found. Before he hanged himself, he said "I don't know where the money is...but I bet if I walk down the street with a shovel, EVERYONE will start to follow me." RIP.

What a shame. Money can’t buy happiness. Probably people bugged him half to death, looking for loans and gifts, every day since he “found” the bags of money.

I got married in the late seventies and major inflation soon hit. Our saying was “Here is a quarter so call someone that cares”.

If these are currently minted, they are pretty worthless for metal content.

If they were pre-64 silver, each would be worth about $2 to $2.50.

While visiting my parents years back I noticed some cans on top of the refrigerator full of silver coins.

My mother said a friend told her to save the pre-64 coins...

A few years later she said she gave a few to the grandkids when they visited to purchase some ice cream...

Yup. 1/4 lb per $5.00 roll, or 5 tons.

40,000 rolls. No idea how those are transported, likely in boxes. I found a pic of a dime box which holds $250; that makes 800 boxes.

Based on the dimensions I found, that would fit a space 5 feet across, 8 feet deep and just under 3 feet tall.

Smaller and heavier package than I figured off the top of my head.

Can’t help but wonder how they plan on moving the cash...

I'd go around the country and hit those coin machines. Good money laundry.

The thieves could dump them into a Coinstar machine, but they’ll lose a considerable percentage off face value that way.

They should have gone for the nickel truck if melting down for base metal value...nickels are currently worth $0.0631127 each in metal (copper/nickel) content (dimes only worth $.0232)....my guess is they are going to spend the dimes at face value (or “CoinStar” them...cops should stake out local Coinstar machines). No need to “launder” them...no serial numbers.

They should be easy to catch. Just be on the lookout for someone buying a Mercedes G Wagon with all dimes.

Long ago my sister worked in sales for a condo developer.

A middle-aged German couple liked what they saw and tells them they want their son to look it over and will be back later.

It is getting late, but a sale is a sale and the Germans want to complete the paperwork.
Then they came in with shopping bags FULL OF CASH!

She said it took forever to count it out.
Then they had to track down a corporate VP to receive the cash; they were not going to lock it in a file cabinet.

This was in Chicago, many East Europeans that do NOT trust banks.

My guess is, if any video is released, a mob of people running off with as may cartons as they can carry. Like seagulls when you drop some fries.
