Yes. It seems to have been a business conflict, since that was why the victim had been in town. I saw somewhere that they had worked together or been involved in a business deal together, and the victim was in town to attend a tech conference where he knew a lot of the people.
BTW, for the sheltered folk among us, getting back at 2:30 am after a conference, dinner and the “after party” is not unusual and does not indicate that the participants are gay.

Nobody deserves it, and the streets of any city should be safe enough to walk on at any hour of the day or night (they were when I was growing up in NYC).
