Researchers found that broccoli contains certain molecules that bind to a receptor within mice and help to protect the lining of the small intestine, thereby inhibiting the development of disease.
Said Gary Perdew. "Our research provides strong evidence that cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts should be part of a normal healthy diet."
According to Perdew, the wall of the small intestine allows beneficial water and nutrients to pass into the body but prevents food particles and bacteria that could cause harm. Certain cells that line the intestine—including enterocytes, which absorb water and nutrients; goblet cells, which secrete a protective layer of mucus on the intestinal wall; and Paneth cells, which secrete lysosomes that contain digestive enzymes—help to modulate this activity and keep a healthy balance.
Perdew and his colleagues found that molecules in broccoli, called aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands, bind to aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which is a type of protein called a transcription factor. This binding, they found, initiates a variety of activities that affect the functions of intestinal cells.
To conduct their study, the researchers fed an experimental group of mice a diet containing 15% broccoli—equivalent to about 3.5 cups per day for humans—and fed a control group of mice a typical lab diet that did not contain broccoli.
The team found that mice that were not fed broccoli lacked AHR activity, which resulted in altered intestinal barrier function, reduced transit time of food in the small intestine, decreased number of goblet cells and protective mucus, decreased Paneth cells and lysosome production, and decreased number of enterocyte cells.
More broadly, added Andrew Patterson, "these data suggest that dietary cues, relayed through the activity of AHR, can reshape the cellular and metabolic repertoire of the gastrointestinal tract."

3-1/2 CUPS a day? No way, find me an alternative.
3.5 cups of broccoli is alot for a mouse.....
Yeah, I have a lot of trouble believing that God intended for us to eat 3.5 cups of broccoli a day.
Unless, of course He was intending to punish us. Which we of course deserve. I’d rather go into slavery in Egypt.
How in the hell do you get a mouse to eat 3.5 cups of broccoli every day? Boiled soft with a little butter, but heck, I’D struggle with that every day.
I don’t mind broccoli, but there is no way I’m gonna eat 3-4 cups a day. No way.
I like broccoli, have it often. I just steam it. 3.5 cups would mean I couldn’t eat anything else. I’m small, weigh 110.
I really believe everyone has to adjust portion size to correspond with their personal size.
And you can squeeze lemon on anything you don’t really like. Trader Joe has a wonderful Soyaki sauce that works too. Basic food group in our house.
This seems really similar to other studies that I read, those studies indicated that you had to eat it raw in order to get the benefit though. Even steaming would destroy the benefit. Does that get indicated in this study or is it not mentioned?
Yeah right, if I was a cow, I could eat that much broccoli. Even a couple of stems give me flatulence. Iam doing fine on regular consumption of yogurt. My gut has no issues so long as I eat 4 table spoons of vanilla yogurt daily.
I eat that amount of cruciferous vegetables I would never catch a virus again because no one could stand to be around me.
I found that eating a lot of broccoli made a great difference in the health of my skin. I love asparagus and artichokes as well. Other green things? Brussel Sprouts, spinaches, and you know what they all have in common? They’re great with bacon.
Steaming doesn’t hurt it, but you need to drink the water left behind through dripping.
Add this to every other food with published health benefits. If you were to eat the required dose of each, you would weigh 800 pounds and die very young.
those studies indicated that you had to eat it raw in order to get the benefit though.

It reduces a percentage. You still get the benefits. If you can choose a juice to drink, like orange juice, drink it raw. Some foods are often consumed raw, for example, fruits and lettuce. Processing tomatoes doesn’t reduce one of its most beneficial components, its red color. Foods have more of the beneficial components than we need.
“3.5 cups of broccoli, or some equivalent of other similar vegetables, keeps the doctor away from your gut.”
It will also keep me away from every room in the house except the bathroom.

I like broccoli but I ain’t eating that much of it in a day ever
I giggled when I found it in English some time in the 90s.
And yes I did buy it for my kids.
The girls giggled but the boys down right howled with laughter.
