Rapper Diddy revealed he pays Sting $5,000 every day for sampling the Police classic “Every Breath You Take” on his 1997 track “I’ll Be Missing You.”
In 2014 it was confirmed that the performer, previously known as Puff Daddy, was handing over $2,000 daily after he asked permission to use the sample only after his song was released.
As a result, Sting was entitled to all royalties from the Grammy-winning single, instead of a percentage, which now totals over $1.8 million per year.

Don’t these performers have actual names?
He may have bought the rights to the song.
Gordon Sumner and Sean Combs.
because it’s Sting’s singing on P Ditty’s recording.
That’s what sold the record, not that it was written by these song writers that the public doesn’t hear of.
Ah, I made that mistake before.
They aren’t people, and thus have forfeited their names.
They are brand names.
Sean Combs....................
Guitar player for U(seless)-2 is ‘the edge’. Egos eh?
“Excuse me, would you mind from now on if you called me ‘Sting’”
“F___ You! Yeah, my name’s ‘Bite’ and this is my buddy ‘Scratch’, now get me a beer, Gordy!”
“Sorry, two Coors Lights coming right up, I’m gonna grow up and be a rock star, you’ll see. Wherever you go, I’ll be watching you, I’ll be watching you!”

They so dumb
Why doesn’t he write his own diddy? Is that too difficult for an “artist?”
Actually, look at the last paragraph. His voice isn't on it, only Andy Summer's guitar is on it. (Sting may have performed it with him at some point.)
Sting also admitted Summer should have been credited as a cowriter, since he added a lot of the music.
I wish I was dumb enough to make $5000/day for work I did 40 years ago.
Is he actually a guitar player, or is he an effects processor?
Meanwhile, Maroon 5 obviously ripped off “Every Breath You Take”, but since they changed a couple notes and didn’t sample it, they pay nothing.
“Todd Gaither and Faith Evans are the only credited songwriters, so why would Diddy be paying Sting?”
The Police had 2 songwriters, Sting, and to a lesser extent, the drummer Stewart Copeland. They didn’t record any songs from outside songwriters.
So if someone else is credited, it’s because Sting or Copeland chose to use them as a proxy, or a pseudonym, both of which are sometimes done for various reasons in the music business.
How much did Vanilla Ice pay Queen/Bowie for “Ice, Ice Baby”?
On which song?
“Guitar player for U(seless)-2 is ‘the edge’. Egos eh?”
Well, egos among rock stars not exactly unheard of. Giving credit where due, ‘Edge’ doesn’t spend a lot of timing wanking on the guitar. No long, tedious solos and screwed up facial expressions.
