[*All currently known Piezoelectric materials are solids. When the solid is compressed or twisted, it releases an electric charge. If the solid is zapped with electricity, the solid changes shape*] - When the liquids were put in a cylinder and compressed with a piston, both generated electricity proportional to the force applied. Blanchard and Hossain placed their liquids in a lens-shaped container. By zapping it with electricity, Blanchard said they were able to change the focal length of the lens.

As for the etymology of boffin...
Per the Oxford English dictionary, the origin is unknown.
Per other language mavens, looks like the term may have been coined by the British military around WWII.
My bet is that the original usage was pejorative.
What a useless invention. The greeniacs intend that we will never again have any electricity.
Pee-ay-zo-electric?
Boffin was a poor, uneducated, working man who inherited a fortune, and later gave it away.
However, there is no documented link to the post-WW2 word "boffin."
Actually, it could be VERY useful. For example, a liquid filled lens could change its shape/focal length.
If the fluid releases electricity proportional to the pressure exerted— then it could work like a piston.
(I don’t know why you would want to do this. But if the pizoelectric fluid will emit electricity with steady pressure rather than alternating pressure and release—then you could just use constant gravity and a rock to generate the pressure on the fluid.
Of course it would be useful. But there won’t be any electricity available to make it useful.
I always heard ‘pie-zo’.
In High School I got my first calculator. It used liquid crystals. The liquid would become opaque when charged which is how the calculator displayed the numbers.
