For centuries, a setting sun has signaled the end of fasting rituals on holidays such as Ramadan and Yom Kippur, a cue to tuck into a delicious meal after a full day of abstaining from food and drink. But what if the sun’s clockwork were to suddenly change, as it does for astronauts riding aboard the International Space Station? The orbiting laboratory whips around the Earth at about 17,000 miles per hour (27,600 kilometers per hour), giving passengers 16 sunrises and sunsets each day.
It’s a question astronaut Sultan Alneyadi has been contending with since his arrival at the space station on March 3. He’s one of fewer than a dozen Muslim astronauts who have traveled to space, and at the end of his mission in about five months, he will have been the first astronaut from the United Arab Emirates to complete a long-duration stay on the floating laboratory.
During his stay, Muslims on Earth will observe the month of Ramadan — a time of fasting, prayer and reflection that runs from the evening of March 22 to April 21. There will also be two Muslim festivals — Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, a celebration of the annual pilgrimage that Muslims make to Mecca, the holy land in Saudi Arabia, that begins June 28.

Maybe there’s a woman to beat on the spaceship.
Well, such a issue would certainly consume all of my time while floating in space. Could not the reporter find any other question to ask during his allotted time for asking about “living up in space” issues? Does he really expect the astronaut to spend all his time concentrating on the rotations of the sun and it’s location? I would suspect the person had many more issues to deal with.
For instance, a question such as “ What do you do with any spare time? Is it possible to read a book in space, such as the latest best seller, your Quran or a Bible?”, would at least introduce the religious aspect and bring a lack of gravity issue question to the forefront without asking such as stupid question? (I’ve never until now wondered about reading while in space, so now wish he had asked such a question).
I don’t recall any Nazarenes firing rockets at my kids schools with regularity.
Once again confirming that there is one religion that you cannot make jokes about. Baptists? Of course! Methodists? Certainly! Jews? Endlessly! Catholics? It’s required!
Muslims? Don’t you dare, you bigot!

I wonder if he brought any explosives with him?

Whenever I get to feeling sanctimonious, I head for the bathroom and evacuate my bowels, and in no time I’m feeling like a brand-new car! High FIVE Buck!
What if he were on the way to the moon and in the sunlight for three or four days? What about Earth to Mars with over a year of continuous sunlight?
I’m a Bahá’í and we use the same basic fasting rules as the Muslims, except for the dates. The fast is for the nineteen days immediately preceding the Vernal Equinox. We have special rules for polar regions with unusually long or short periods of daylight.
“Outer space” starts 6 inches off the ground for Muslims
You know why there are no Muslims in star trek?
It’s the future.
Several thousand kilos of hydrogen and oxygen would work.
Jews observed Sabbath as it would be observed in Jerusalem, I would assume Muslims would observe Ramadan as observed in Mecca.
NINE ELEVEN, vanquished civilizations, Daniel Pearl, Benghazi, groomers, Notre
Dame, no go zones... Seven Days War - 5 versus 1 and the 5 lose.
Too many people forget.
Question is how did they stuff the camel into the space capsule ??
Exactly. Imagine CNN giving a moment of air time or an inch of column space to how an astronaut on the ISS was going to celebrate Easter. Not in a million years.
SIMPLE……. INTERMITTENT FASTING.
He’ll be very fashionable.
There was an anime that had a Muslim in it that had a holographic device that pointed towards Mecca wherever he went. It’s funny to think this might become a reality.
I also hope we can get off this planet before we nuke each other.
It’s called a watch you set thE time to whatever local time you want & act accordingly
