A large study of women with rheumatoid arthritis has found that those taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had a greater chance of achieving remission.
The study revealed the following:
Pre-menopausal women (those still experiencing a regular menstrual cycle) reported fewer RA symptoms than peri-menopausal (irregular or infrequent periods) or post-menopausal women with RA.
RA patients using HRT or oral contraceptives in combination with the drugs prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis had a much greater likelihood of remission.
Post-menopausal women, comprising 63% of the participants, of whom only 8% were using HRT, were less likely to achieve RA remission compared to pre-menopausal women.
The findings suggest that female sex hormones could play a major role in improving the outcome of women taking drugs prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis.
Remission rates were higher in some groups of women who were taking HRT or oral contraceptives at the same time they were taking medicines for RA, and in fact, RA remission was twice as high in peri-menopausal women.
Lead researcher UniSA Associate Professor Michael Wiese says it's premature to say that HRT and oral contraceptives have a protective effect against rheumatoid arthritis, but the study has revealed a potential connection.
"The peak age of onset of rheumatoid arthritis among females is 45-55 years, corresponding with a drop in estrogen when women typically enter a peri-menopausal period, where their periods become irregular.
"Furthermore, at the onset of menopause there is an increase in pro-inflammatory proteins."
Conversely, younger women with rheumatoid arthritis who fall pregnant experience a 50% decline in inflammatory activity.
Early post-menopausal women (post-menopausal women aged <45 years) made up 5% of the participants, 25% were pre-menopausal (still experiencing a regular menstrual cycle), 9% were peri-menopausal, experiencing intermittent and irregular periods, and 63% post-menopausal.

Getting pregnant was an alternative.
My FIL had severe RA that totally deformed his hands and fingers. It was hard to look at his hands and he must have been in severe pain all the time. But I don’t ever recall him complaining about it, not once. He was amazing.
So does this mean I should be looking for women with RA or not?
A lot of women with autoimmune disorders also have high blood clotting antibodies. That means no hormone replacement.

According to the CDC, OA of the knee is one of five leading causes of disability among adults. About 80% of people with OA have some degree of movement limitation and 25% cannot perform major activities of daily living.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune condition, is a chronic inflammatory polyarthritis, meaning that it manifests in multiple joints of the body. The inflammatory process primarily affects the lining of the joints (synovial membrane), but it can also affect other organs. The inflamed synovium leads to erosions of the cartilage and bone and sometimes to joint deformity. Pain, swelling, and redness are common joint manifestations.
Chapter Seven of Dr. Saul’s book, coauthored with Drs. Abram Hoffer and Harold Foster, entitled “Niacin: The Real Story,” discusses reversing arthritis with niacinamide. It’s an amazing story.

ARTHRITIS: THERE’S MORE YOU CAN DO THAN JUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT
FIRE YOUR DOCTOR!!
I’m getting some kind of arthritis in some of my fingers but don’t know if it’s the RA kind. It’s painful at times, but not always.
Have had my wedding rings re-sized to get them on and off. It messes me up at the piano as the range I’ve had for decades is different.
I just read that people are having knuckle replacement surgery. The recovery seems more extensive than with hip replacement. A splint on the whole arm for three months is what I read.
How many of them were on long-term hormones as birth control?
Might that have helped caused the problem?
I treat mine with marijuana oil. I rub it in every morning. It’s the only good use I could find for the stuff I grew.
Thank you. Is that the CBD stuff they advertise?
No, this oil comes from a marijuana plant. I have some hemp bud but I make CBD oil from it to help with sleep.
Thank you. That was interesting. As a guitar player I’m doing everything I can to reduce the arthritis slowly creeping into my hands. Looks like I need more vitamin c, b and a different form of niacin. And being 58 I’m already well into menopause. Ugh.
Compounded bio identical hormones solved the debilitating pain I suffered at menopause. An RA doc wanted me on $10,000 a year drugs with side effects (of course he did). My hormones thru a compounding pharmacy cost me @$2,000/yr...but I don’t feel like I am frail and ancient. And, of course the FDA wants to ban them.
Fantastic. Niacinamide is your friend!
Love Dr Andrew Saul. His Book NIACIN the REAL Story is great! And he has TONS of youtube videos! I love Natural Health. I am 66 yrs old soon to be 67. I am on High Blood pressure meds, That’s it. Doctor said to me, most folks your age are on 5 meds or more.
I will be sure to look him up tomorrow at work when I’ll have time to watch.
Just bought his book on kindle. Will start reading tomorrow while on my treadmill. Gonna take a look at his videos next. Thanks again.
FYI, Yes lots of folks do not like the flush Niacin gives you.
So I have both Niacin and Niacinamide. When I take 100 mg Niacin before bed it also relaxes me and I get a good night sleep.
Happy reading!
I have it on AudioBooks and have listened to it 6 times. I always get something new out of it each time I listen.
Been taking Niacin for a couple years and don’t mind the flush. My husband hates it though and refuses to take it. Hoping I can get him to take the niacinamide. I think it would help greatly with his tinnitus and other issues. Started reading the book here at work (I manage a self storage facility and have a LOT of extra time to do whatever I want, I love my job).
