Oscars 2023: Who Will Win, Who Should Win
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | March 9, 2023 | Scott Feinberg, David Rooney

Posted on 03/12/2023 4:00:11 PM PDT by sphinx

Best Picture WILL WIN: Everything Everywhere All at Once

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once is the likeliest winner, having swept the guilds’ top honors, including the Producers Guild’s, which is decided on a preferential ballot, and also won Critics Choice and Spirit Award prizes, among many others. But the Academy’s preferential ballot wouldn’t seem to favor such a polarizing film — many Academy members love it, but many others found it incomprehensible — so an upset could come from German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which dominated at the BAFTA Awards (indicating strong European support) and would be Netflix’s first-ever winner in this category, or Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, a critical and commercial triumph that helped to revive theatrical moviegoing. — Scott Feinberg

SHOULD WIN: The Banshees of Inisherin

My heart beats strongest for this two-man civil war tragicomedy, which shows a new maturity and depth of feeling from Martin McDonagh. It assembles a peerless ensemble, each of them etching finely drawn character portraits, not to mention scene-stealer Jenny, the miniature donkey. Todd Field’s caustic reflection on abuse of power, Tár, would be another deserving winner. — David Rooney

It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.:)

The attached article is two men's opinion. They do a pretty good job of discussing the apparent frontrunners. There are many other current articles on the same subject, but I liked this one because Feinberg and Rooney note in passing how the SAG, Critics Choice, Spirit Award, BAFTA, etc. honors were distributed. The Oscars don't have a monopoly on the discussion; they're just the last big awards hoedown, with the biggest legacy name. But each group that goes through this annual ritual reflects a different voting constituency and different preoccupations. I'm currently partial to the SAG Awards because that's of, by and for the actors. SAG doesn't vote for best picture, best direction or any of the craft awards; it's all about the acting, period, and fellow actors are the voters. To win a SAG award, you have to impress your peers. But this is Oscar night. So for discussion:

In accordance with my new personal discipline, I am going to refrain from trashing movies or performances that I've not seen. I prefer to look for the good stuff.

Of the films/performances up for the major (non-craft) awards, I've seen The Banshees of Inisherin; Living; Causeway; Everything Everywhere All at Once; Tar; To Leslie; Top Gun: Maverick; and All Quiet on the Western Front.

If I were picking the winners?

Best Picture: I'd be happy with Banshees, Top Gun: Maverick (which would be an even bigger surprise than CODA winning last year), and All Quiet on the Western Front (which won't win Best Picture but which is a good bet for Best International Feature Film; it's also the only one of the furrin' flicks that very many people have seen).

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Colin Farrell/Banshees or Bill Nighy/Living. Pick 'em. Mind you, that's just my 2 cents worth; this category is wide open.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role: I liked Brendan Gleeson/Banshees and Ke Huy Quan/Everything Everywhere All at Once, who is probably the closest to a lock in this year's competition.

Actress in a Leading Role: This category is also wide open. Michelle Yeoh/Everything Everywhere All at Once and Cate Blanchett/Tar are probably the favorites, and either would be a worthy pick.

Actress in a Supporting Role: Kerry Condon/Banshees, Jamie Lee Curtis/EEAAO, and Stephanie Hsu/EEAAO are all excellent. I haven't seen the other two. If I had to pick one, I'll say Kerry Condon, but that's really coin flipping.

In the other categories, EEAO is going to win for Best Directing; I will eat my own pixels if it doesn't. EEAO has been cleaning up across the board through awards season. It won't sweep the Oscars, but if it gets knocked off its pedestal, it will be because the Oscar voters decided to demonstrate their independence and throw some consolation prizes to some pretty good movies that have been playing second fiddle so far in the awards derby.

I'll leave any discussion of the merits of the films for later, but I will say that if you haven't seen EEAO, don't embarrass yourself commenting on it. It is wildly creative and unlike anything you have ever seen. It careens all over the place at a breakneck pace and slides into some off color stuff that I would have left out -- generally in an overreach for even more comedy in a film that is pretty funny even without it. It also reaches for themes that are poignant and beautiful. Even if it's not your cup of tea, don't dismiss it too casually. The other movies are much more straightforward.

Go at it. And of course, if you haven't seen any of this year's nominees but know that all of them are terrible because Hollywood hasn't made a good movie since The Godfather ... well, you are welcome to your opinion.:)

I’m still sore that Battle: Los Angeles wasn’t voted Best Picture.

Completely detached from it this year.

All they had to say was “Jimmy Kimmel” and I had better things to do with my evening...

Thanks. I’m still working my way through Oscar Winners from 1920, forward. ;)

I can’t waste precious time on this current batch-0-cr@p.

Oscar Winners through the ages:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls028898450/

I will say this: The remake of ‘West Side Story’ is absolutely STUNNING. I’ve watched it twice and want to watch it again! The dancing and musical score, cinematography, the flat out HATRED various socio/economic groups had for one another is palpable. This movie is NOT ‘PC’ and NOT dumbed down. It was absolutely a joy to watch. Gritty, yet uplifting.

And Steven Spielberg directed! Who woulda thunk it? Really, TREAT your fine selves. :)

I liked In Bruges but I just couldn’t get into the Banshees Movie. Everyone raves about it but I am glad I didn’t pay money to watch it.

Which movie has the worst acting and most ridiculous woke, leftwing story plot that perpetuates false stereotypes and distortions of history? Can’t wait to see.

The only nominated pics I've seen are Top Gun and Western Front. Both excellent!

I'd like to see Jamie Lee Curtis win only because she's never before been nominated.
