Oscars 2023: Who Will Win, Who Should Win
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | March 9, 2023 | Scott Feinberg, David Rooney

Posted on 03/12/2023 4:00:11 PM PDT by sphinx

Best Picture WILL WIN: Everything Everywhere All at Once

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once is the likeliest winner, having swept the guilds’ top honors, including the Producers Guild’s, which is decided on a preferential ballot, and also won Critics Choice and Spirit Award prizes, among many others. But the Academy’s preferential ballot wouldn’t seem to favor such a polarizing film — many Academy members love it, but many others found it incomprehensible — so an upset could come from German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which dominated at the BAFTA Awards (indicating strong European support) and would be Netflix’s first-ever winner in this category, or Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, a critical and commercial triumph that helped to revive theatrical moviegoing. — Scott Feinberg

SHOULD WIN: The Banshees of Inisherin

My heart beats strongest for this two-man civil war tragicomedy, which shows a new maturity and depth of feeling from Martin McDonagh. It assembles a peerless ensemble, each of them etching finely drawn character portraits, not to mention scene-stealer Jenny, the miniature donkey. Todd Field’s caustic reflection on abuse of power, Tár, would be another deserving winner. — David Rooney

Blake lively is so beautiful & classy. Did you see “The Town?” She was amazing in that.

Ahh. The Elvis actor. I see. Looks a little to metrosexual to play Elvis to me, but...I didn’t see the movie, so I can’t comment! He may have looked quite different in the role.

I agree about the dress.

Have never seen the Simpsons but am familiar with the character.

This was the best ceremony in years. No annoying politics, nothing stupid.

Agreed.

The big winner, not unexpectedly, is EEAAO. I enjoyed it, although the breakneck pacing and surreal kaleidoscope of plot lines is exhausting. Whatever else one can say about it, EEAAO is the most wildly creative film in years.

The Daniels pushed relentlessly for humor and generally succeeded, although they veered into some off color stuff that I would have avoided. Beyond that, it’s too late at night to even begin.

So far, Kimmel has behaved himself.

No, he couldn't help himself saying film editors have the talent to pare 4,000 hours of violent insurrectionist footage down to a few minutes of a guided Capitol tour. It was plain that no one on audience cam appreciated that.

Got to give it up for Brendan Frasier for his heart-felt thank you speech. He seemed to be a genuine person amidst so many phonies.

Yes. I am, as I get older, embracing my curmudgeoness, but...I don’t want to make that an excuse for being a hide-bound, ignoramus, which I think might be easy to do if I am not careful.

I am quite crusty about Hollywood lately, but...need to keep an open mind for aspects of it.

Such as people who might do a fine job at something, even though they don’t fit my template.
