March 7 (UPI) -- A popular Australian beer is being recalled by regulators for an unusual reason -- it contains "excess alcohol."
Food Standards Australia New Zealand said Watermelon Sour Beer from Your Mates Brewing Co. contains "excess alcohol" as a result of a secondary fermentation.
The agency said the beer, sold at stores across Queensland and online nationwide, could pose a risk of illness due to its alcohol content.
Secondary fermentation is the aging period following the initial fermentation and is sometimes used to remove excess yeast from the beverage. An unintentional second fermentation can produce more alcohol and carbonation intended by the brewer.
"We've only seen this occur in a handful of unrefrigerated cans so far, but we take the safety of our mates and quality of our beer very seriously, so we've jumped onto this with the authorities to execute our first-ever product recall," Your Mates Brewing said in an Instagram post.
Watermelon sour beer? Nope.
You could sip on a high-alcohol beer like a martini.
If it’s not Fosters I’ve never heard of it
Is it really too much alcohol, or is it something more sinister? You decide.
Sounds newsworthy, but I have to ask how big the excess is over the labeled amount. 0.1%? 0.2%.... 2%.
What precision is being called for here?
Otherwise, it’s a case of “there is no bad publicity” for the brewer.
Thst sounds like a feature not a bug 😏
really too much alcohol, or is it something more sinister?
IDK but perhaps it is taxed by the percentage of alcohol. If it has more than the percentage getting taxed, well, we can’t have that! Stamp tax!
Back when I was a young man, I’d take regular beer and add a shot of vodka, as it would increase the alcohol content and not change the taste that much. I don’t do alcohol any more...............
Castlemain XXXX was my favorite on my visit there.
I brewed a Krolsch beer for the first time and somehow it fermented after bottling.
Blew the bottom out of two liter bottles but man, it was good - tasty and powerful.
I used to add burbon.......vodka always tasted like rubbing alcohol to me.....never was a fan
Me and my family lived in Australia for six months in late 1984, early 1985 and it was interesting to see the drinking culture there (they very much enjoyed their beer and wine and spirits). The drinking age was 18 but with efforts to teach responsible drinking habits to all (no drunk driving, etc). One of the major beer brands Toohey’s brewed a 2.2 alcohol content beer and marketed it that you could enjoy one or a couple of them and be still under the legal BAC limit.
I also used Everclear when available................
About 10 years ago I tried some type of a watermelon beer by New Belgium that was outstanding.
Recall it? It should be handed out to the folks.
Yeah the crowd I used to hang with back in the 80s would occasionally throw “hunch punch” parties.
Grain alcohol mixed with a fruit juice of some sort......the fruit juice hid the taste......that made it REALLY dangerous. 😏
“Product Recall”
Looks like it’s flying off the shelves.
“Is it really too much alcohol, or is it something more sinister?”
That was my very first thought, too! Too much alcohol is a BS cover story.
An unvaccinated employee? An unmasked employee? Failure to pay enough Dane Geld? The CEO was shacking up wtih the regulator’s wife?
Agreed.
