Weekly Garden Thread - March 4-10, 2023 [Signs of SPRING Edition]
March 4, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 03/04/2023 7:11:34 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Very nice! Yeah, those Azalea had to go. I love boxwood. :)

Beau does ‘shrub removal’ that same way. He took out some AWFUL Barberry across the front of the house and I replaced them with Viburnum and perennial grasses. SO much better!

I feel your pain! We missed the last big dump, but I’m sure Mother Nature still has one more planned for us in SW Wisconsin.

The daffodils and star magniolia survived our snow and cold, so far...and my “forest” garden plans are taking shape (cut @40 trees down in past year.) Now need to bring in and spread yards and yards of dirt. Do high school kids in your area NOT want to make a little cash? We are having hard time finding help.

Love the Mexican-style pottery, especially the Wiener dog! Good use of space where nothing will grow. ;)

Wow! That’s efficient - and as a tree-lover/hugger, that was painful to watch!

Yup, caused me to wince a little, too.

Saw a lot of American Robins in my yard this week. Must have been 2 dozen. Also saw a few mosquitoes! 😳

Barberry. Ug. I removed a line of them when we moved here a few years ago. Shrubs from hell. All those thorns. 🙄

Ouch! Too efficient! Wrong on so many levels!

excavator mounted forestry mulcher BMS

Mulching on riverbanks
Road sides maintenance
Creation fire breaks
Land clearing in the oil and gas industry
Brush and clearing forests after harvesting wood
Maintaining of power and communication lines
Mulching of stumps in parks
Clean up field borders
Vegetation management
Clear overgrown ditches
Eliminate piles of woody debris that farmers have accumulated

I understand the reason for this, but the luddite in me says that we have hordes of idle prisoners and homeless that should be busy doing this instead!

Rain here and evidently a lot the night before last. I normally cross two spring fed creeks go go out but when I crossed the first yesterday morning, it had 5-6" of fast moving overflow. Then I got to the second bridge and couldn't tell exactly where it was due to so much overflow. Had to turn around and go back across the first bridge to take the alternate, long way out to the paved road.

I'm needing to dig a bunch of post holes but that ain't happenin' for a while. Will take two weeks to be dry enough but will likely rain again before that. Typical Spring rainy season.

I could probably do the 2 foot deep holes for the high tunnel in a week but I need to set some fence posts and I try to go at least 3 1/2 feet deep on those. Need 16 for the high tunnel and probably as many for fence, oh joy.

Two more heat mats should be coming in today and that will be plenty to warm the grow tent on cold nights. Still have some LED lights in my cart at amazon.com from a week ago. Grabbed a couple of $9 LED light fixtures from Menard's and they don't put out as much light as I'd like but I have a place I can put them up for home lighting. I'll order the amazon ones this weekend. Need to grab another strip plug to set up all the lights and heat mats.

March - more seeds to sow.

My growing zone is on the left end of this pic.(6a or 7a but not 6b?) Varies by year of course. Altitude too which can vary by a few hundred feet in a small area/short distance.

We got about 3-4 inches of fresh fluffy snow last night in west Michigan. Starting to melt already as they are predicting 40 and 44 degrees for the next 2 days. It sure is beautiful. We have been hearing sandhill cranes for a couple of weeks now. No bluebirds yet, Last year this time we had about a dozen drinking from our melting roof gutters. Have not started seeds indoors yet, a little too early yet. I do have 3 amaryllis to repot with fresh soil.
Made some cottage cheese today and will just dump the whey on the compost pile. I wish I knew someone nearby with chickens, they love to drink it and it is loaded with calcium. Tomorrow making some butter. The price ion the store is up way higher than what I can make it for and we have a great store belonging to a completely A2/A2 dairy where we get our milk for kefir and I usually get a half gallon of cream when I go there for coffee. This time it’s for butter.
Having trouble locating romaine lettuce seeds. All the stores around here carry Burpee. I think they no longer carry romaine. I have some older seeds from last year but I always get a few new packets each year. I would like to try the Yugoslavian red romaine lettuce, looking for seeds tat are reasonably priced. I do have a s-load of Costa Rican red pepper seeds and giant jalapeno seeds, if anyone wants some. The costa Rican is a hybrid but these seeds are a third generation and have produced beautifully each year.
And Diana I have all the seeds I need for your bouquet planters. I also cut back the red raspberry canes a couple of weeks ago, still have the rose bushes to do (only 4). Happy Spring everyone!

Thats a great company, gave done. Business with them for decades. No chance. If any ricotta out of this whey, clear and I only started with a half gallon of milk so not a big amount. Just had some of the cheese on a slice of toasted crusty sourdough bread, spread with last summers costa rican red peppers in olive oil and topped with a slice of roast beef. Yum.
