Taking vitamin D supplements may help ward off dementia, according to a study.
Researchers explored the relationship between vitamin D supplementation and dementia in more than 12,388 participants.
The team found that taking vitamin D was associated with living dementia-free for longer, and they also found 40 percent fewer dementia diagnoses in the group who took supplements.
Professor Zahinoor said, "We know that vitamin D has some effects in the brain that could have implications for reducing dementia, however so far, research has yielded conflicting results. Our findings give key insights into groups who might be specifically targeted for vitamin D supplementation. Overall, we found evidence to suggest that earlier supplementation might be particularly beneficial, before the onset of cognitive decline."
While Vitamin D was effective in all groups, the team found that effects were significantly greater in females, compared to males. Similarly, effects were greater in people with normal cognition, compared to those who reported signs of mild cognitive impairment—changes to cognition which have been linked to a higher risk of dementia.
The effects of vitamin D were also significantly greater in people who did not carry the APOEe4 gene, known to present a higher risk for Alzheimer's dementia, compared to non-carriers. The authors suggest that people who carry the APOEe4 gene absorb vitamin D better from their intestine, which might reduce the vitamin D supplementation effect.
Previous research has found that low levels of vitamin D are linked to higher dementia risk. Vitamin D is involved in the clearance of amyloid in the brain, the accumulation of which is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Studies have also found that vitamin D may provide help to protect the brain against build-up of tau, another protein involved in the development of dementia.

After evaluating sources, I try to get between 3,000 and 3,500 IU a day. I used to take fairly more, but more recent studies, and a general reduction in the Upper Tolerable Limit, made me settle for that range, which reduces negative issues.
The Miracle vitamin.
.
Negative issues? Like terminal flatulence?
Higher blood calcium levels—taken out of your bone, along with others.
There are legitimate reasons to moderate on some things. Maybe be at the upper end of moderate, instead.
I don’t include any sun exposure in that vitamin D range I take, though.
I take D3 every day now when I can remember to take it
Agreed.
This is not a controlled study that will allow you to make inferences about causation.
Just because some groups do more of one thing doesn’t mean it causes any outcome. Example - people with arthritis take more aspirin. You can’t conclude that it’s the aspirin causing the dementia.
BTW recent studies in the New England Journal found no effect of supplement of Vitamin D in terms of osteoporosis or colon cancer. That’s in the general population. There may be some people for whom it is beneficial. It can’t hurt.
I put my Aunt on a Vitamin D regimen years ago when she was starting to have confusion issues. I do believe it improved her condition to a degree and she did very well, it also was great for her health as never got sick and we both avoided taking the Covid-19 Vaccines and never got sick.
Important to take additional K2 and Mg, as these activate the hormone (it's not really a vitamin) and direct it to move Ca to the bones instead of the arteries.
K is especially important because it reduces excess vitamin d, and a lot of people take excess.
I just posted a link about excess retinol possibly causing osteoporosis in another thread.
I take two a day... 5,000 each.
Me, too...during winter....more, if I feel like I’m coming down with something.
Drinking beer every day could ward off dementia
https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/health/drinking-beer-every-day-could-28090935
When compared to abstainers, occasional and light to moderate drinkers were 22% less likely to develop the condition.
And those who consumed up to two-and-a-half pints a day had a 38% reduced risk of being diagnosed compared to non-drinkers. Even the biggest drinkers were 19% less likely to be a dementia sufferer than those who didn’t consume alcohol.
When the researchers probed deeper into the association, drinking 40g of ethanol per day, the equivalent to five units, was linked with a lower risk of dementia compared to those who had never had a tipple.
bkmk
Quality matters.
I just shopped for D3 for a friend at a Walgreens she goes to. IMHO, the products there were horrible. No idea of the sources.
I use Carlson’s Norwegian Super D Omega-3 liquid. Two nearby health stores have them—one is national chain Natural Grocer and the other a local store. AMZ of course has everything.
NaturalGrocer is, IMHO, a wonderful place to shop for supplements and heathy food. Nothing but pasture-raised eggs there at extremely good prices. Every supplement you ever heard of, and a wonderful cosmetics section. Plus membership “discounts” and monthly sales on very good things.
I’m trying to remember if I’ve seen this study before but I can’t remember /
D3 is D3. It is produced in your skin upon UV exposure, but the commercial products are produced industrially (synthetically) according to a standard process and there is little reason to counterfeit it.
