The person was infected with Naegleria fowleri after rinsing their nose with tap water, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Fox 4. The patient died on Feb. 20.
“The adult patient reportedly performed nasal rinsing daily with unboiled tap water, which is thought to be the source of the infection,” the CDC said in a statement to the station.
The CDC additionally said this was the first case of the deadly infection this year and the first ever reported in the winter months in the US, according to the station.
The CDC did not detail where the person lived in the state, but state health officials said in a news release last Thursday there was a case of Naegleria fowleri that took place in Charlotte County, located in the southwest part of the Sunshine State.

That “nasal rinse” thing, first time I heard it, I knew it was a dumb idea.
Humans have acid in their stomachs for good reason. The acid kills the microorganisms that throughout history humans were likely to be ingested with their food and water. Sorry but evolution did not account for modern human habits that include forcing contaminated water and nasal contents under pressure into sinuses.
As I said on other entry, his schnoz was already infected. I don’t see the CDC doing tap water tests to confirm that it was the source. That, however, is not gonna happen since if it comes up zero the nose washer would be sued for being ineffective.
Yah see, this manufacturer did not bribe the CDC to give them a no-liability emergency license.

If you want to use them you need to use distilled water.
I have well water and three stage filtration: Silt, chemical and UV. The UV is supposed to kill bacteria and viruses.
They’re basically saying that the approved disinfection methods of chlorine, fluoride, or UV are useless against this bacterium?
Better get ready to spend a few trillion dollars converting all of the municipal water systems to upgrade their disinfection systems.

Our well water would be far to cold for this type of amoeba.
I do not know either, I should ask. We have the water tested annually. A neighbor had e coli, which encouraged us to get the UV filter.
A quick google search (probably a popular search this morning): “UV is very effective in killing Naegleria fowleri bacteria, as well as all other bacteria.”

Two words: Big Berkey.
All of these nasal wash tools say to not use tap water. Instead they have sterilized water with buffers to be used.
Where this could be a problem as well.
Might want to either use only boiled water or otherwise disinfected water.
And blowing your freaking nose will not help to clean out any infection lurking in your sinuses.
I haven’t had a flu in over 45 years, so blowing your nose does work... And I think I’ve only had about 2 colds since then too... So yeah... Blowing it works.
So based on your study of... one... we can see that just blowing your nose makes sure you get no viruses.
Your scientific prowess is unmatched.
People who don’t blow their nose on a daily basis are really doing their body and themselves a disservice. Taking medication to stop sneezing or shooting water through your nose to prevent a runny nose is foolishness... If your nose is running, it’s telling you to blow it. Just do it.
