What is almost never mentioned is the role the Soviet Union played in helping North Vietnam...and the mistaken belief of most people that they never played an active part at all....
Starting in 1964, North Vietnamese fighter pilots and anti-aircraft gunners were being trained in the Soviet Union, with Soviet advisors also being stationed in North Vietnam...
Soviet archives opened after the fall of the USSR indicate that these anti-aircraft crews, mainly Ukrainian, served for much of the war...
Early on, when the North Vietnamese troops were still unfamiliar with the new Soviet anti-aircraft batteries, Soviet crews manned the guns themselves and these crews did, in fact, shoot down US planes. One such Soviet battery reportedly downed six US planes
It has been acknowledged that roughly 3,000 Soviet soldiers served in North Vietnam during the war, though they were designated ../Soviet “military experts,”...
There were also widespread reports (though these were never confirmed) that Soviet snipers had embedded with NVA units and infiltrated South Vietnam to test their new SVD Dragunov sniper rifles. Witnesses described these snipers as white men with blue eyes...
within the unofficial theater of the war, Soviet GRU Spetsnaz special forces took part in at least one, and likely more, ground combat operation. In 1968, a team of ten Spetsnaz attacked a covert US base on the Cambodian-Vietnamese border, destroying three of the then-new US Cobra attack helicopters and actually stealing another. This operation was confirmed only after the fall of the Soviet Union, and if there was one Soviet special forces mission, there were almost certainly more...
[Soviets] supplied their communist allies with food, petroleum, transport vehicles, iron, steel, fertilizer, arms, and ammunition. Most critically, the Soviets supplied all of this as aid rather than loans (as the Chinese had done early in the war).
Which flowed from WW1 and more, with massive aid to the Soviet Union in WW2 (to shorten the war, but helping to enable the Cold War), with proxy wars since.
Meanwhile, the West destroys itself from within, and with Putin looking for past Soviet glory, and both persecute non-pc conservative Christians, fighting a war against God that cannot be won.
Little known? We didn’t know that the S-75 anti-aircraft missile installations that were shooting down our F-4s, F-104s, and B-52s were coming from the Soviet Union?
I think the question was who was manning the weapons.
Besides Jane Fonda, of course.
The Soviet Union was the model failure of Communism and an example why it won’t ever work. Because of that, you rarely hear anyone mention The Soviet Union or USSR anymore. Now the Russian “Dictatorship” is responsible for everything during that era, even though all their elected officials from every State, got together and voted to do what they did during their government’s existence.
First, I wasn’t in Vietnam, but it’s no secret from the Veterans who served that they ‘encountered’ Soviet personal on the ground and in the air. That was another component that was suppressed by the government/media apparatus to avoid further ‘escalations’ elsewhere.
Next, both the Soviet Union and Communists in China took advantage of US weapon deliveries. The Soviets to fight the cold war, and the Chinese communists to fight their own people....because they avoided freeing their nation of the Japanese.
In the end, what difference does it make? We here in the US have real problems and it’s hard to complain about elsewhere when we refuse to order our own house.
Wait until the public finds out that China had its own soldiers on the ground in Vietnam fighting US soldiers!
Yes, that is hardly the case to the informed, but ask any HS or college student and likely many only know of the accusations and of the relative few cases of war crimes in a 10 year jungle war with an enemy that committed "war crimes" as a matter of policy.
Not to meaning NK. But these were all "volunteers!"
They History Channel’s excellent “Dogfights” series showed about Russians flying Migs during Vietnam.
“and both persecute non-pc conservative Christians, “
You need to explain that statement re Russia.
Who was funding the other proxy in that war? How many foreign soldiers served the other proxy? Where did they come from?
I worked for Norden Systems on radars in the 80’s and early 90’s. I mentioned this at a subsequent job to a Russian coworker and he said what a coincidence I commanded a radar installation in Vietnam. I said ‘The Russians were in Vietnam? “He sputtered and tried to back out of the statement. I told him to lighten up. We were both just doing what our government told us to do.
Lots of Russians died in Vietnam. Oddly, World War Three didn’t break out.
I do not think many Russians died in Vietnam, while proxy wars are a substitute for WWW3.
There were Soviet pilots flying MiGs in both Korea and Vietnam.
Excellent way to gain combat experience for their pilots.

Moscow church destroyed in sign of new Russian repression
Just as the government has tightened control over political life, so, too, has it intruded in matters of faith. The Kremlin’s surrogates in many areas have turned the Russian Orthodox Church into a de facto official religion, warding off other Christian denominations that seem to offer the most significant competition for worshipers. They have all but banned proselytizing by Protestants and discouraged Protestant worship through a variety of harassing measures, according to dozens of interviews with government officials and religious leaders across Russia.

And the same liberal media that served as a fifth column during the Vietnam war has only increased.
The soviets owned the air defense network particularly the SA-2 and their associated radar systems. That wasn’t even a secret in the 70’s.
I see. How about outlining Ukraine’s offenses? Your comment warrants as much. I find no such commentary in your recent history.
You are intelligent, dedicated and well-reasoned, but your distraction - ‘bias’ - on this conflict is both obvious & revealing.
Little known to who??
