Am casually looking at new trucks.

Posted on 02/25/2023 7:26:39 AM PST by LouAvul

Inventory is increasing but a long way from pre panic levels. Plus, they don't seem to be interested in negotiating price.

Before, I'd contact (via email) a half dozen dealers with my criteria, they'd respond with a price, and I'd go to the lowest offer and negotiate from there.

No more, it seems.

No trades. No financing. Cash only.

What's the FR braintrust think about how to approach new vehicle purchase these days?

My dad has a friend that bought one of the new Ford Maverick hybrids (not sure if that qualifies as a real truck though) had it for several months close to a year and traded it back in and got more money for it than he bought it for. His was originally priced at the lower base model pricing right around $20k. Be opted for one of the ones loaded out closer to $40k this time. He said the gas mileage was excellent.

Basically the first purchaser of a new vehicle is going to
going to get the largest immediate drop in resale value. A
used vehicle doesn’t drop as fast as the new purchase drop.

If you are not on foot or a bicycle, wait.

My prediction is that by the end of summer, they will be begging you to buy at any price.

A lot of people are going to run out of money before the end of the year. Hang on to yours and you will be calling the tune.

My son has lost two pickups in the last three months. One was crushed by a drunk driver while it was parked. The replacement, a cheap old beater decided to catch fire on the freeway.

He on the way as we speak to look at another one to buy.

This is a terrible time to buy a vehicle. Try to drive your old one for another year. We have a 2003 Dodge Ram and a 2006 Honda CRV both in good condition. We want to downsize the truck but decided to wait for prices to drop after this near death experience the country is going through. Maybe next year.

Why do you NEED a NEW truck, vs WANT a new truck?

Have you got the madison avenue fever, been watching ads? Jealous of a buddy? Want to impress people or “feel good” about yourself?

“How does one get anything done with a 4 foot bed?”

A Lincoln Town Car used to have a bigger trunk and a bed cover to boot.

I had to read that twice. The first time, I read “Looking at New Tricks” and I was like “Dude, wrong site for that”.

Plan to purchase last day of the month. Commissions are tiered. For this to work..you must have 2 to 3 vehicles in mind. Walk away if you are not getting your deal.

THe depreciation on a NEW is, that once it’s titled, it’s considered USED. New goes to DMV with a certificate of Origin from the Manufacturer and it can’t be anything other than NEW.

Used is used. A little used or a lot used.

For me, it depends on the vehicle. European Luxury cars I buy new. Full size trucks I buy low milage used from Arizona/New Mexico. The domestics are as good as Toyota/Nissan in this category, maybe better, because parts are cheaper and more available with better aftermarket support.

As far as reliability goes Toyota is King.

Right? But I, for one, can't fault them: If I needed to have offroad ability, my personal preference would be for a king cab and towing ability so that a long bed wouldn't be a sacrifice. As well, if I'd had a family my preference would have been to put my kids in a king cab rather than an SUV (safety).

That stated, personally I mock the flawless finish 'road queen' trucks sporting the shiny undercarriage with brightly colored lift kits.

Couldn’t agree more! I’ve owned two 4x4 Tacomas, and loved them both. If I wasn’t pulling a 14,000lb trailer often, I’d be driving my 2015 Taco still.

My dad used to say that rust is with you forever but you can fix everything else.

or

Rust is like sin, you can slow it down, but you can’t stop it.

I drove a Tacoma on my last business trip. I found the cab opening to be really small. Reminded me of Nissan products.

Toyota has been manufacturing the Carolla continuously since 1966.....there’s a reason for that.

In contrast the domestics quit making the camaro, mustang and the Mopar models and had to go back to them to stimulate sales....always wondered about that.
