World War II-style rationing could be an effective way to reduce carbon emissions, according to new research from the University of Leeds. In a paper published today in the journal Ethics, Policy and Environment, academics argue that rationing could help states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions rapidly and fairly.
Policymakers have considered other schemes to reduce emissions, including carbon taxes and personal carbon trading schemes, but the researchers say these favor the wealthy, who could buy the right to pollute if trading were allowed.
The authors argue that carbon rationing would instead allow people to receive an equitable portion of resources based on their needs, therefore sharing out the effort to protect the planet.
Joint lead author Dr. Nathan Wood, who is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at Utrecht University's Fair Energy Consortium, said, "The concept of rationing could help, not only in the mitigation of climate change, but also in reference to a variety of other social and political issues—such as the current energy crisis."
Initially, governments could regulate the biggest polluters, such as oil, gas and petrol, long-haul flights and intensive farming, creating scarcity in products that harm the planet. Rationing could then be introduced gradually, to manage the resulting scarcity with the aim of meeting everyone's basic needs.
The academics identified two options for rationing policy. Policymakers could introduce an all-encompassing carbon allowance, giving out 'carbon cards' like bank cards to track and limit usage. Alternatively, governments could ration specifically selected goods, such as flights, petrol, household energy, or even meat or clothing.

exactly! there is no energy crisis! only a fake shortage created by liberals!
and no one supports rationing, especially over the made up “crisis” of glo-BUL warming
Well, it's only fair....
How about we COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE BY GIVING ZELENSKY & UKRAINE A TRILLION DOLLARS? /s
Let’s start by rationing GOVERNMENT!
Limit the amount of armed government agents from all departments to 50, one for every state.
Next, start rationing funds by limiting budgets of federal government agencies to about the same as the average neighborhood mom and pop store.
Next, eliminate the fleet of federal government owned vehicles. Those of us with private sector jobs drive our own cars to and for work. What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander. Eliminating the government fleet would effectively meet our 2070 emissions goals overnight.
Next, require all salaried government employees to submit performance goals and weekly summaries of their activities and achievements so they can be properly managed and their performance gauged. We in the private sector have been doing that all our working lives.
THAT’s the rationing we REALLY need!
'The authors argue that carbon rationing would instead allow people to receive an equitable portion of resources based on their needs, therefore sharing out the effort to protect the planet.'
How about they just divide it up evenly? Those with the private jets and multiple large home would be the hardest hit. Probably wouldn't affect me at all.
But this is a solution where the cure is worse than the disease.
Cow. Deer. Ewe.
Greta is doing a book tour promoting buying her book on the evils of capitalism...
oh the huge manatee.
The name can be changed and the verbal gymnastics could get an Olympic score but it’s still pure, Unadulterated Socialism. Straight up.
im sorry but you have reached your carbon limit
what better way to control a population
“…people to receive an equitable portion of resources depending their needs….”
Sound familiar?
The elites want to reduce you to peasants.
“Climate change” is just the rationale for it.
> An extremely damaging and impractical solution to a non-problem. <
Yep. In a way, this Climate Change hysteria is like what happened in Salem, Massachusetts back in 1692. One nut identifies a “witch”, and the whole community goes completely crazy. Common sense? Impartial investigations?
We don’t have time for that!
I have a better solution.
All the “professors” and “experts” get to do hard agricultural labor and live in shacks in the fields without electricity.
Then they can save the planet!
Difficult to know what bothers me most about this article:
1. The assumption that Carbon Dioxide is causing climate change, and not a result.
2. That restricting average citizens with rationing would have any effect of nations like China.
3. That climate change, for the warmer, is really a bad thing, when data suggests that it’s far better than a cooling climate.
4. That restricting the nations that already are limited in CO2 release would make a difference, flying in the face of the law of diminishing returns.
5. Advocating destroying or eliminating a free nations ability to protect itself, on the alter of climate change, while it’s military and political enemies do not, seems not only ‘not smart’ but potentially treasonous.
6. The ‘climate educated’ like AOC have already said the earth will die in like 8 years anyway.....and we can’t change china....so what is the point?
7. Even IF all of the above drastic economic and political change were done, and everyone became a slave/servant to a totalitarian government apparatus and CO2 religion, how is that a world anyone wants to live in?
LOL
like biden lowering the price of gas
you mean the exempt elite?
And securing the border....................
A solution looking for a problem.
“In 2019 China is estimated to have emitted 27% of world GHG, followed by the United States with 11%, then India with 6.6%.”
“In 2020, 27% of the GHG emissions of the United States were from transportation, 25% from electricity, 24% from industry, 13% from commercial and residential buildings and 11% from agriculture.”

Together, US trucks, cars, planes and trains emit 2.97% (27% of 11%) of global man-made CO2 emissions.
