The Maltese Falcon is a 1941 American film noir written and directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, based on the 1930 novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett and indebted to the 1931 movie of the same name. It stars Humphrey Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade and Mary Astor as his femme fatale client. Gladys George, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet co-star, with the last appearing in his film debut. The story follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.
"The Maltese Falcon" (1941) - final scene
Who can forget the classic lines too. Such as when Joel Cairo (Peter Lorre) is knocked out by Bogie and, when he comes to, says “Look what you have done to my shirt!!” And poor little Wilmer.....
I can only imagine the late night drinking sessions with Bogie and Ward Bond.....
It is so sad that you need to explain the film.
I like MF - but I love The Big Sleep’.
There can never be another Peter Lorre. Fantastic character.
After hearing of the hoopla about this film all these years, I recently got to watch it start to finish. Not sure what the hype was about. It was a bit of a mess as stories go and utterly forgettable. 🤷♂️
One of my favorite all-time films.
Agreed. Peter Lorre was a one-of-a-kind actor. His style and professional acting ability has never been duplicated. I also liked his Mr Moto series.
This was all in an era where good scripts and good acting carried the show. There was no need for undressing, raunchy sex scenes and the bad guys always got killed or off to prison. And, no sexual perversion or America bashing. The best years of Hollywood from the 1950’s back to its beginning.
I’ll take New York style Naked City writing and acting.
And they didn’t drop the F-bomb once.
It’s pretty funny when you hear they way they pronounce some of the names in this movie.
The wimpish bad guy hit-man sounds like his name is “Wilma” and the female love interest sounds like her name is “Mr. O’Shaughnessy”.
“Who can forget the classic lines too.”
“You’re a good man, sister.”
I actually like the 1931 version better.
When Bogart takes the guns away from Wilmer
“A crippled newsie took ‘em. I made him give them back. “

I have an exact replica of the Maltese Falcon. My nephew, as a serious hobby & side business, makes movie and nerd stuff replicas. I’m talking pretty darn exact. Impressive stuff.
He was asked by a “Goonies” Museum to loan them a replica prop he made from the movie.
My Maltese Falcon sits on a shelf next to our fireplace in the living room. It is pretty cool. Great conversation piece.
If you are on FakeBook, look up C&R Prop Works
When you’re slapped you’ll take it and like it.
I remember that last scene so well when Humphrey Bogart said “Here’s looking at you kid” and he walked off into the fog and got lost and ended up in Casablanca where he played a piano in a bar..... : )
