In 1997, archaeologists unearthed a skeleton buried in the fetal position at Toca dos Coqueiros, an archaeological site in Brazil's Serra da Capivara National Park. Based on the size and shape of the skull, they identified the remains as female and named the skeleton Zuzu. But that classification has remained steeped in controversy(opens in new tab), with many researchers claiming the deceased was actually male.
Now, a new facial approximation of the 9,600-year-old skull may help put this debate to rest.
Last year, researchers took dozens of photos from different angles of the skull, which is on display at the Museum of Nature in Piaui, Brazil. Using photogrammetry, they digitally stitched the 57 photographs together to create a virtual 3D model of the skull...
To inform their work, they used computerized tomography (CT scans) from living virtual donors and applied that information(opens in new tab) to "adjust the structure of the skull" by including tissue thickness markers, study co-author Cícero Moraes(opens in new tab), a Brazilian graphics expert, told Live Science in an email...
The researchers created two results, both depicting a young man with a broad nose and lips. One of the approximations included hair and eyebrows based on information provided by the virtual donors, and the other featured Zuzu with closed eyes and without hair. Because the digital face was "slightly emaciated," the researchers retracted the lower jaw to match a gap that came from some missing teeth, according to the study.

I really hate when you do that, SC.
The problem is that I want to read them all, and if I do that, there will undoubtedly be links to other, similar articles that I will want to read, and it will therefore take up an entire day. Or two. Or several, and go on well into the night.
The only solution is to not read them at all, and the result will be when I’m asked by St Peter what uplifting things I’ve learned in my sojurn on Earth, I’ll have to tell him, “Nothing that counts for much...and it’s all SC’s Fault.”

Thanks-an interesting article for those of us interested in where people traveled to/from tens of 1000’s of years ago, what kind of boat/canoe they traveled in, what they brought with them as trade goods, who they mated with, etc. Whether the skeleton of Zuzu turns out to be male or female, the recreation certainly gives credence that at least some of the earliest immigrants to S America were Polynesians from the area of Australasia who traveled there by boat when sea levels were low in the Ice Age-the younger re-creation of Zuzu looks like many of the Native American/indigenous people in S America today...
Hey, that’s the guy that made my sushi last night.
He had “good hair”.
Walt Kowalski : Relax, zipperhead. I’m not gonna shoot you. I’d look down too, if I was you. You know, I knew you were a dipshit the first time I ever saw you. Then I thought you were worse with women than stealing cars... Toad.
Thao Vang Lor : It’s Thao.
Walt Kowalski : What?
Thao Vang Lor : It’s not Toad, my name is Thao.
Doesn’t look Brazilian...
You must use the same Home Depot near me...

50% of Brazilians self-describe as being black.
