Decaf kills coffee withdrawal symptoms (Placebo effect or familiar flavor, helps)
Medical Xpress / University of Sydney / Journal of Psychopharmacology ^ | Feb 14, 2023 | Llewellyn Mills et al

Posted on 02/15/2023 7:01:57 PM PST by ConservativeMind

Coffee drinkers can take advantage of a new placebo discovery showing decaffeinated coffee quenches withdrawal symptoms in people reliant on their daily caffeine fix.

Research found caffeine withdrawal symptoms, such as headache, fatigue, bad mood and irritability, shrank after participants drank decaf—regardless of whether or not they knew it was decaf.

For the study, 61 heavy coffee drinkers, who consume three or more cups a day, went without caffeine for 24 hours and had their withdrawal measured.

They were then separated into three groups. Two groups were given decaf, with one group told truthfully they were drinking decaf and the other deceived into thinking it was regular coffee. The third group, a control, was given water.

Three-quarters of an hour later, all participants were asked to rate their withdrawal symptoms again.

"The group we lied to reported a big drop in caffeine withdrawal even though there's no pharmacological reason why it should. Because they expected their withdrawal to go down, it did go down," Dr. Mills said.

"In other words, a placebo effect. We've found this in several studies now.

"What was interesting in this new study is that withdrawal symptoms also reduced even when people knew they were getting decaf. Not as much as the group we lied to, but a significant amount."

Years of associating the taste and smell of coffee with withdrawal reduction means decaf can elicit a conditioned withdrawal reduction effect even without the caffeine, and even, it turns out, without the expectation.

"We did this study to model some of the processes involved in addiction to any drug, including more serious, or harmful, drugs. What we found has some promise for developing new treatments for addiction that integrate placebo effects."

I do suggest that preppers who are coffee addicted buy a couple of large jars of freeze-dried coffee for deep storage.

“Instant coffee has a shelf life of over 20 years. No matter whether it’s opened or unopened, it won’t go bad, especially if it’s properly stored. You should store instant coffee in a cool, dry place.”

Sure, Jan.

24 hours isn’t long enough to measure anything. Try 3, maybe 4 to 5 days, maybe 2 weeks in total and then get back to us.

I talked with someone who said his sister in law and husband went through a horrible time fighting out of the blue with each other. As it turned out, they finally discovered that unbeknownst to them they both had been drinking DeCaff coffee for several weeks. LOL.

DeCaff should be illegal. Coffee that doesn’t do what Coffee does.

Decaf coffee is impotent.

I don’t actually have a sister but I do have at least 8 step-sisters and half-sisters scattered around, some are extremely good-looking.

Thankfully I don’t drink decaf.

Years ago I went to see my aunt and uncle at their home near Memphis.
A mug of coffee at breakfast followed by another soon after.
Later, around 11, another mug.
Went to a mall, lunch in the food court.

After lunch I got a really bad dull headache, something fairly unusual for me.

Went back to their house so I could lay down. I asked for Advil and coffee, and mentioned that Advil plus caffeine plus an hour nap was my usual headache cure.
They mentioned they had recently switched to decaf. Mystery solved.

There’s no need to suffer the heartbreak of coffee withdrawal.

Decaf is 97% caffeine free or 3% caffeine. Regular coffee is only 6% caffeine so, if you think drinking decaf means you’re getting no caffeine you’re quite wrong.

I have not found this to be true. I once bought decaf by accident and had no idea why, over the course of the week, I was feeling more and more awful no matter how much coffee I drank. When I finally noticed that green label... man... I was on my way to the store immediately.

Regular roasted coffee, decaf or not, contains about five different acids. One of those acids is only processed by your stomach. Either type of coffee will greatly disagree with you if your stomach is compromised or removed due to illness due to that one acid.

Only air roasted coffee has a very low quantity of that acid. the Roasteriee in Kansas City and a few other places in the country sell air roasted coffee. Works for me as a cancer survivor but I still drink tea about two thirds of the time. I have become as much a tea aficionado as I was a coffee nut.

From Healthline:

What Is Decaf Coffee?

Decaf coffee is not completely caffeine-free.

While USDA regulations stipulate that decaf should not exceed 0.10 percent caffeine on a dry basis in the package, comparison between brewed regular and decaf coffee shows that decaf appears to have at least 97% of caffeine removed.

To put this into perspective, an average 12-ounce (354-ml) cup of coffee containing 180 mg of caffeine would have about 5.4 mg of caffeine in a decaffeinated state.

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/caffeine-in-decaf#what-it-is

The difference is not half. It really is 97% less caffeine, and with that, went a little flavor.
