23 Baltimore schools, 2,000 students: Not one tested proficient in math
American Thinker ^ | 10 Feb, 2023 | Eric Utter

When are the voters who pay for these useless schools going to wake up?

According to WBFF-TV (Fox45), the Maryland State Department of Education recently released Baltimore students' 2022 test results, which revealed that an incredible 93% of third- through eighth-graders tested below their grade level in math.

In fact, after analyzing the results, the Baltimore news station found 23 city schools where not a single student tested proficient in math.

The terrible twenty-three comprised ten high schools, eight elementary schools, three middle and high schools, and two elementary and middle schools.

In total, 2,000 students at those "learning institutions" took the math assessment, and zero scored at grade level. Not. A. Single. One.

And the vast majority of Baltimore's other grade, middle, and high schools didn't fare much better, as most of their students received abysmal test scores as well.

0 for 2000? How is that possible? And we're not talking about "genius" or "exceptional" students, or even those above average — just those competent at their grade level!

Of which there were none at those 23 institutions of lower edumacation. And zero/none is less than "any."

I guess now since the cash registers automatically make change I guess you don’t need algebra.

But they do need to be exposed to simple algebra and geometry. For many it will be the only exposure to abstraction and structured rational reasoning they will get. That’s why efforts to remove it as a high school graduation requirement are misguided. They may never practice it but at least it was laid out in from of them how to do so. (Mastery is not the goal!) For some it will make an impression on them. The others will continue to go through life emoting to a conclusion.

Sure. Sometimes I’ll go through simple arithmetic in my head, using integral calculus. It’s not necessary, but the pathways are there.

The ‘hood is a special place. Preferred pronouns? Sheee-it. Conjugating verbs is beyond the scope, or needs, of most of the folks. Frederick Douglass must be weeping.

What does “proficient” mean in this context?

I think it would be like the grade "C".

I wonder how Baltimore’s private and home-schooled children of the same age brackets, and across all races, perform on the same standardized tests.

Logic suggests that the test results could hardly be otherwise, since almost all the students whose parents value education, discipline, self-control, safety, etc., will be driven out of a horrible school system. The Baltimore school system has created a death spiral for itself, from which there is no redemption.

If you can't do A2 + B2 = C2 you are not a functional human being. I tried to teach that to a couple of carpenters! I gave up and I am a pretty good teacher. LOL. Had a guy in our shop that keep "losing" rulers. Found out he he couldn't read fractions so just marked the ruler, evidentially had too many marks to tell them apart so needed a new ruler.

How could they?

Whatever might be said about heredity or upbringing, no one in the school system is teaching them math. They may be pretending they do, but they lie.

Yes! It is just that simple.

Worth repeating this elementary math used in concession stands all across the USA.
It’s easy to teach a cashier how to count out the correct change. Says the sales is $3.73 and the customer hands over a $20.00 ->

put the $20 on top of the register -> say 3.73
take out 2 cents ->say 3 75
take out a quarter -> say 4
take out a dollar -> say 5
take out a 5 -> say 10
take out a ten -> say 20
and then hand all that to the customer.
Easy Peases.

Maybe teaching the understanding that you can solve a subtraction problem with addition is the breakthrough...

“And what do you think is the essence of culture?

Drugs? Hos? Cash?”

And which side of the IQ curve do you think most people with that culture inhabit?

You see, people that say “it’s culture”, have to ask themselves the next question. Why do some groups of people (say blacks) end up with one culture and others (say Asians) with a totally different one.

I think you know the answer. It’s okay to accept it - it’s just a reality we have to live and deal with. And as long as we keep denying it, we can’t address the real problem. And it’s only getting bigger.

“Long winded but my point is we gradually moved away from educated or kids over thirty years.”

You haven’t been long winded enough. There is more work for you to do.

You’ve come up with the problem. Now you need to work on the cause and then the solution.

Have you asked yourself why things have ended up this way? That’s the most important part.

I think the scheduling is also part of it. They have 90 minutes classes but don’t have the classes everyday. 90 minutes is far too long. We had 45 minutes everyday and I feel was helpful with continuity of learning.

You would be shocked at the number of college and graduate students who don’t understand decimals. If you give them 2.1 and 2.01 and ask them which is larger they don’t know. Many say that with decimals everything to the right of the decimal works backwards.

To deal with the IQ problem is to become a pariah - sort of like the Social Security/Medicare problem in politics.

“To deal with the IQ problem is to become a pariah”

You’re absolutely right! Nobody, especially “conservatives” wants to touch this with a twenty foot pole, lest they’ll be tarred as racists and white supremacists.

Ironically, though, the vast majority of the population (including blacks) and politicians tacitly accept the reality of significant IQ differences every time they come out with programs, both for schools and work, to lower standards because blacks disproportionately fail those standards. Or saying that getting a voter ID is too much of a challenge for blacks.

Or to constantly complain about the school performance gap between the races.

So everybody knows and accepts the racial IQ reality, but every one is afraid to explicitly touch it and instead prefers doing away with merit and discipline.

This means that things are only going to get worse, as whites continue to pander and slobber and give in to any demand by blacks. And as for blacks, their level of communal responsibility will further decline because they can get away misbehaving with no consequences.

But, though blacks are major players in this drama, they are not the source of the problem. They play the part of extremely useful “oppressees” for the Marxist left (which is mostly white), and sees the world as made up of oppressors and oppressed.

The blacks have replaced Marx proletariats as the victim class, and they make an especially good victim precisely because of the IQ difference. That will, on average, forever keep them at the lower rung of the ladder (unlike the “proletariats” who could move up the economic scale in a capitalist system) and thus the Marxists can have their oppressor-oppressed world view reinforced and validated and justified by the realities we see.

And they use that to gain power as they have already done to a great extent.

So, leftists and blacks are in a symbiotic relationship, with white leftists having most of the power and blacks get to enjoy playing victims and being showered with bennies and excuses to act irresponsibly with no consequences. It’s a nice win-win for both sides.

There is one more major player in this drama - what Stalin astutely and correctly called the “useful idiots”, who, in a country where they get to vote, are the ones that determine who gets elected, since there are tens of millions of them.

These are people who are easily led, can’t think on their own, can easily be brainwashed and are endowed with a high amount of insipid pathological compassion. They re easily “guilted” and think of themselves as “nice” people whose worst fear is to be called a racist or judgmental or mean or a hater.

And the left has learned how to play them like a Stradivarius and that is the source of their power.

So the 64k question is, where does that leave us reality-grounded conservatives? How do we overcome this? Does the whole system have to collapse before we can rebuild it?

(Didn’t mean it to be so long, but I was on a roll.) :)

IQ is also genetic - and it has always annoyed my how so many conservatives in the US and Europe deny biology and instead e stress “culture” and “assimilation.” You can’t and shouldn’t assimilate morons regardless of race.
